BJP Member of Parliament Saumitra Khan expressed support for the suspension of Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the session. He described Banerjee’s comments regarding women as insensitive and disgraceful. Khan stated that the actions of the Trinamool Congress reflect a long-standing failure to advocate for women’s rights within the party.

According to Khan, the gravity of Banerjee’s remarks demonstrates a considerable lack of sensitivity, particularly given his position as a senior legislator. He emphasised that if a senior MP can make such comments, it highlights a broader issue of insensitivity within the Trinamool Congress.

Support for Suspension from Within TMC

Rebel TMC MP and NCPI leader Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar also supported the decision to suspend Banerjee, alleging that he has a history of targeting women with inappropriate language. She reiterated that this behaviour is unacceptable, noting that Banerjee’s remarks were not isolated incidents.

Dastidar asserted that the conduct exhibited by Banerjee, particularly during recent parliamentary sessions, warranted his suspension. She claimed that he has routinely directed abusive language at women, which subsequently led to his expulsion for the rest of the session.

Parliament’s Response to Allegations

The suspension followed actions taken by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who introduced a motion in the Lok Sabha aimed at sanctioning Banerjee. This was prompted after TDP MP KP Tenneti, who was presiding over the session, informed the House that a formal written complaint had been submitted concerning Banerjee’s conduct.

The complaint alleged that Banerjee exhibited “unprecedented behaviour” while Parliament was in session, describing instances where he allegedly verbally abused NCPI members and Minister Bhupendra Yadav. The motion was passed by the House, confirming his suspension.

The incident has drawn significant attention from various political spheres, highlighting ongoing issues related to conduct and language in parliamentary proceedings. As the Monsoon session continues, the ramifications of Banerjee’s actions and the subsequent suspension will likely be a topic of discussion among lawmakers.
