The Chairman of the Bar Council of India (BCI), Manan Kumar Mishra, has made a public appeal urging the legal community, educators, healthcare professionals, journalists, and others to assist in steering students away from violence and misinformation. This appeal comes amidst ongoing student protests that Mishra claims have been overtaken by anti-social and anti-national elements. In a detailed four-page statement, entitled ‘An Appeal to the Intellectuals of the Country’, he highlights the detrimental impact of these protests and calls for leaders to protect the fabric of the nation.

Concerns Over Foreign Influence

Mishra expressed his concerns that adversarial foreign entities are attempting to destabilise India by feeding misleading narratives to the youth. According to him, this campaign aims to undermine the country’s peace, development, and constitutional order. He alleged that certain political figures are inciting younger generations, contributing to lawlessness, and that these movements are often funded or supported by foreign nations and anti-India elements. This influence is reportedly being propagated through organised social media campaigns, spreading harmful misinformation.

In his declaration, Mishra called upon legal professionals and other intellectuals to undertake the responsibility of presenting the truth to students and the general public. He emphasized the importance of differentiating between legitimate democratic protest and activities characterised by violence and misinformation. The call to action seeks to ensure that constitutional values are upheld and that intellectual leaders play a pivotal role in promoting social harmony.

As part of his appeal, Mishra encouraged teachers and academicians to engage constructively with students. He urged them to listen to their concerns and guide them toward peaceful and lawful ways of expressing discontent. Educational institutions, he suggested, should serve as platforms for informed dialogue and constitutional awareness, rather than succumbing to the allure of chaos that could jeopardise students’ potential and future opportunities.

Promoting Responsible Conduct Across Professions

Beyond the legal field, Mishra extended his appeal to healthcare professionals, engineers, scientists, journalists, and other influential figures. He highlighted the need for these professionals to promote accountable public behaviour, advising them to ascertain the validity of information before disseminating it. Furthermore, he called for a united front against the spread of rumours, hatred, and incitement to violence in society.

The statement also reached out to business leaders, parents, and civil society organisations, urging them to actively participate in fostering an atmosphere of peace and adherence to constitutional values. Mishra underscored that a collective commitment to understanding the ramifications of violence is crucial for the stability of the nation. He appealed for responsibility across all societal sectors in promoting awareness and responsible citizenship.

Concluding his appeal, Mishra stressed that genuine politics can only thrive in a secure environment. He asserted that authentic student activists would not engage in vandalism, violence against police, or disregard for the law. He called for collaboration among lawyers, student leaders, political organisations, and law enforcement to restore peace guided by constitutional principles.
