Mohammad Nawaz Receives Sanction for ICC Anti-Doping Code Breach

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pakistan’s all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz has been sanctioned for violating the ICC Anti-Doping Code after testing positive for a banned substance during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The 32-year-old cricketer, known for his left-arm spin, has been handed a three-month ineligibility period, which could be shortened to one month if he successfully completes a required substance abuse treatment programme.

The positive test for Carboxy-THC, which is categorised as a “Substance of Abuse” under the ICC guidelines, occurred after a doping test conducted on February 7, post Pakistan’s World Cup match against the Netherlands in Colombo. Nawaz acknowledged the offence and clarified that the substance was consumed outside of a competitive setting and not intended to enhance athletic performance.

The ICC announced that Nawaz’s ineligibility has been retroactively effective from May 1, 2026, the date on which he accepted a provisional suspension voluntarily. The governing body stated that the sanction could be reduced should the athlete fulfil the requirements of the treatment programme that has been approved by them.

Nawaz’s Provisional Suspension Details

Since he has already served two and a half months of provisional suspension, Nawaz is not expected to miss further matches if he completes the rehabilitation conditions set forth by the ICC. The organisation confirmed that upon acceptance of the sanction and commitment to the treatment programme, Nawaz’s provisional suspension will be lifted.

The ICC stated, “Subject to Nawaz completing a substance of abuse treatment programme to the ICC’s satisfaction, Nawaz will not be required to serve any further period of ineligibility.” The governing body further clarified that all records from his match against the Netherlands and any subsequent matches until May 1 will be disqualified due to the violation.

Nawaz’s situation has been under investigation since April, with early reports indicating that his intended participation with Surrey in England’s T20 Blast had been adversely affected by the ongoing anti-doping proceedings. This revelation has raised concerns regarding his immediate future in the sport.

Career Overview and Implications for Nawaz

Debuting internationally in 2016, Mohammad Nawaz has established himself as a crucial player in Pakistan’s white-ball cricket lineup over the past decade. Notably, he was instrumental in the team’s journey to the finals of the T20 World Cup held in Australia in 2022, which underscored his significant contribution to the sport.

Nawaz’s career has been distinguished by his versatility, having represented Pakistan in all three formats of cricket. His pivotal role in various matches has solidified his status within the team, making the current sanction particularly impactful on both his career trajectory and the team’s strategy as they prepare for upcoming competitions.

As this situation unfolds, followers of the sport will be closely monitoring Nawaz’s compliance with the ICC’s requirements and his subsequent return to the game. The outcome of his treatment programme will not only determine his immediate playing future but also reflect on Pakistan’s cricketing reputation on an international stage.
