Deepika Padukone Endorses ICC’s Maternity Policy As Landmark Development

The CSR Journal Magazine

Actor Deepika Padukone has expressed her approval of the International Cricket Council’s recent introduction of post-pregnancy return-to-play guidelines for female cricketers. She referred to the initiative as a ‘landmark moment for women in sport,’ sharing a screenshot of the announcement on her Instagram Stories with remarks highlighting its significance.

The ICC has characterised these guidelines as the first comprehensive framework of its kind globally. The aim is to facilitate a smoother transition for female cricketers returning to the sport after childbirth. Additionally, the guidelines seek to provide essential support for member boards, medical teams, coaches, and support staff involved in this process.

Through this initiative, the ICC aims to establish a more conducive environment for motherhood and sports. The post-pregnancy guidelines address key areas such as medical care, psychological support, individual recovery plans, and phased training schedules. These efforts are intended to ensure that motherhood does not impede a player’s career in international sports.

ICC Chairman Highlights Importance of Inclusion

ICC Chairman Jay Shah commented on the guidelines by emphasising that the ongoing development of women’s cricket hinges on fostering opportunities, inclusion, and care for athletes at all stages of their careers. He asserted that no player should have to choose between maternal responsibilities and representing their nation at the highest competitive level.

Shah further explained that these guidelines represent a progressive step towards creating a more supportive atmosphere within the sport. By supplying member organisations with practical advice, the ICC aims to ensure that female cricketers receive the necessary support throughout their pregnancies, thereby empowering them to return to the game with renewed confidence.

The policies also encompass recommendations for childcare support and provisions tailored for mothers travelling with infants, all intended to facilitate the players’ reintegration into cricket after their maternity leave.

Deepika Padukone’s Personal Connection to the Initiative

Deepika Padukone’s endorsement of the ICC’s initiative comes at a significant time in her life, as she is currently expecting her second child with husband Ranveer Singh. The couple made their pregnancy announcement public in April, accompanying it with an engaging Instagram post featuring their daughter, Dua, who was seen holding a positive pregnancy test kit.

In September 2024, the couple welcomed their first child, revealing her name two months later. Padukone’s involvement and support for the ICC policies underscores her commitment to discussions concerning health, well-being, and women’s empowerment in various spheres.

As a vocal advocate for policies promoting inclusivity and supportive working environments for women, her support for the ICC’s guidelines serves to reinforce the importance of such initiatives in professional athletics and beyond.

Upcoming Projects for Deepika Padukone

Aside from her role as an advocate for women’s issues, Deepika Padukone continues to maintain an active presence in the film industry. She is set to appear alongside Shah Rukh Khan in the film ‘King’, directed by Siddharth Anand. Additionally, she will star opposite Allu Arjun in Atlee’s upcoming project ‘Raaka’.

Her ongoing career in cinema, combined with her support for the ICC’s maternity guidelines, indicates her multifaceted contributions to both the entertainment industry and the pursuit of gender equality in sports.
