Assembly Speaker Breaks Silence on Ritabrata Banerjee’s Expulsion and TMC’s Leadership Proposal

The CSR Journal Magazine

Amidst rapid political developments in West Bengal, State Assembly Speaker Rathindranath Basu has broken his silence regarding the controversial expulsion of TMC MLA Ritabrata Banerjee and the rejection of the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) proposal for the Leader of the Opposition.

The political landscape shifted dramatically within 48 hours after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari revealed that the CID had initiated an investigation against Abhishek Banerjee and other TMC lawmakers. The probe follows allegations of signature forgery lodged by TMC MLAs Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha. In a swift retaliatory move, the TMC expelled Banerjee within 20 minutes, only for him to be recognized as the Leader of the Opposition representing the “authentic TMC” shortly after.

Responding to the swirling controversies and questions regarding these developments, Speaker Basu clarified the assembly’s position on two major fronts:

‘Expulsion Did Not Follow Due Process’

Addressing the TMC’s lightning fast decision to oust Banerjee, Speaker Basu stated that the party’s move violated its own procedural rules.

“The expulsion letter does not hold validity under the party’s own constitution,” Basu explained. “Standard procedure requires serving a show cause notice and allowing the member adequate time to respond. A member cannot simply be expelled on a whim in a single day. However, since they possess the necessary legislative numbers, we have acknowledged the current status.”

Discrepancies in TMC’s Opposition Leader Proposal

When questioned about why the TMC’s official proposal for the Leader of the Opposition was turned down, the Speaker pointed out technical and legal flaws in the communication received from the party.

“I have strictly adhered to the law, doing neither more nor less than what is constitutionally required,” Basu asserted. He further revealed that previous official correspondence from the party contained highly questionable signatures. “Because there were discrepancies regarding the signatures in an earlier letter from the party, we have handed the matter over to the CID for a thorough forensic investigation.”

The Speaker’s remarks underscore a deepening constitutional and legal deadlock between the assembly framework and the ruling party’s administrative decisions.
