Assam Government Approaches Aditya Dhar For Biopic On Army General Lachit Borphukan

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Assam government has approached filmmaker Aditya Dhar to direct a biographical film on the renowned Ahom general Lachit Borphukan. This initiative follows the success of Dhar’s previous work in the Dhurandhar franchise. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his belief that the film could effectively showcase Lachit Borphukan’s legacy to an international audience. In a recent Facebook Live session, the Chief Minister confirmed that discussions with Dhar are currently taking place.

Sarma acknowledged Dhar’s achievements, noting the substantial impact of his recent film, Dhurandhar. He stated, “The movie Dhurandhar was a big hit. Aditya Dhar was the director and he is among the best known names among his contemporaries,” according to reports by PTI. The Chief Minister articulated his vision for the biopic, suggesting that a large-scale Hindi film could introduce Borphukan’s remarkable story to viewers worldwide.

Furthermore, Sarma indicated that his preliminary discussions with Dhar had been optimistic, and he anticipates Dhar’s visit to Assam in August to delve deeper into the project’s creative direction. The Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to the film, regardless of whether Dhar remains the director.

Government’s Commitment To The Project

While expressing enthusiasm about working with Aditya Dhar, Sarma emphasised that the government is prepared to engage other directors if necessitated. He stated, “If Aditya Dhar is unable to direct the film, we will approach other directors. The objective is to ensure that a grand biopic on Lachit Borphukan is made.” This decision underscores the commitment of the Assam government to honour the legacy of Lachit Borphukan through cinema.

The proposed biopic forms part of a broader initiative by the Assam government to depict the historical figures of the state on film. In the 2026-27 Budget presented on July 10, the government announced intentions to support films based on the lives of both Lachit Borphukan and freedom fighter Kushal Konwar. This funding aims to enhance the visibility of Assam’s rich historical narrative.

The commitment to historical representation through film reflects a growing trend among regional governments to preserve and promote local history. The biopic on Lachit Borphukan seeks to illuminate the state’s past and enrich the understanding of its significant contributors to Indian heritage.

Significance Of Lachit Borphukan In History

Lachit Borphukan is celebrated as one of the most significant military leaders in Assamese history. He is particularly remembered for his role as commander of the Ahom kingdom’s forces during the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, where he successfully thwarted Mughal expansion into Assam. His leadership qualities and strategic prowess were instrumental in achieving this victory.

Despite suffering from a serious illness during the campaign, Lachit Borphukan exhibited remarkable determination and courage on the battlefield. His unwavering dedication inspired his troops, solidifying his status as a venerated figure in Assam’s history. Ultimately, his contributions are commemorated annually on Lachit Divas, a day dedicated to honouring his legacy and significant impact on India’s military history.

The legacy of Lachit Borphukan extends beyond Assamese boundaries, as his achievements are recognised nationally, underscoring the importance of his story in India’s historical narrative. The anticipated biopic seeks to further amplify his legacy and educate audiences about his enduring influence.
