Students in Jharkhand have escalated their agitation by declaring plans to burn effigies of Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi across all 24 district headquarters. This move comes in response to ongoing concerns regarding alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).

During a press conference held on August 15, student representative Piyush Kumar articulated that the upcoming protests will mark a departure from peaceful methods previously employed. He indicated an urgent demand for the cancellation of the JSSC Combined Graduate Level and JPSC 11th to 13th examinations, as well as a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into these allegations.

Kumar stated that if their demands remain unaddressed, the Chief Minister should resign. He announced the commencement of this heightened phase of protest with the effigy burnings slated for the following day.

Future Plans for Demonstrations

Further details on their strategy were provided by another student leader, Ravinder Paswan, who reaffirmed that effigies of both Soren and Gandhi would be torched in all districts, including Ranchi. He accused the Congress party of complicity by not supporting the students’ demands adequately, citing a prior assurance from Rahul Gandhi of their solidarity.

Paswan noted the potential for future escalation, indicating that if their concerns are not adequately addressed, students would surround the Chief Minister’s residence on August 20. The statement emphasised that this would not be a mere request, but a significant demonstration of dissent.

In his remarks, he expressed the students’ frustrations over the government’s perceived inaction over the past 22 days, affirming an urgent need for change in their approach to protesting. He pointed specifically to the inadequacy of their previous Gandhian methods.

Chief Minister’s Response and Ongoing Issues

The ongoing unrest coincides with a period wherein students have been raising concerns regarding the fairness of recruitment examinations, leading to widespread protests. The students’ agitation has seen notable actions including an indefinite hunger strike by fellow student leader Devendra Nath Mahto, who accused police of preventing him from participating in a significant public event.

In reaction to the protests, Chief Minister Soren has committed to enhancing transparency in recruitment processes and improving the educational framework within the state. He introduced an initiative titled “Chhatron Ki Baat – Chhatron Ke Sath,” aimed at gathering feedback from students on educational improvements.

Despite the government’s assurances, student leaders assert that the measures proposed thus far are insufficient to address their grievances fully. The insistence on a CBI inquiry highlights a critical demand for accountability regarding the alleged irregularities associated with the recruitment examinations.
