The release of Apple’s iPhone 18 series is imminent, with an official launch anticipated in September. This new series is expected to introduce enhancements such as a fresh chipset and improved camera features. Notably, speculations suggest that it may debut Apple’s first foldable iPhone, expanding the brand’s portfolio.

Although attention is focused on the iPhone 18 series, discussions about the device’s 20th anniversary and the anticipated iPhone model are already beginning. The original iPhone made its debut in June 2007, marking an important milestone for the technology sector. As such, the 20th anniversary will occur in June 2027, but Apple is likely to release this special model during its typical autumn launch window, akin to how the iPhone X was presented for its 10th anniversary in 2017.

Interestingly, there are indications that the anniversary model may bypass the numbering scheme entirely, similar to how Apple skipped the ‘iPhone 9’ and moved directly to the iPhone X. The upcoming model is being informally referred to as the “iPhone 20” or “iPhone XX,” as anticipation builds around its launch.

Design and Technological Innovations

The rumoured design for the anniversary iPhone promises to be distinctly different from previous models. It is expected to feature a curved, all-glass exterior with an edge-to-edge display devoid of visible cutouts. According to industry insights, this design aims to create a more natural swiping experience, with glass extending around all four edges through minimal ‘micro-curves.’

Another significant alteration is the possible introduction of under-display Face ID technology. This would mean that the infrared sensors necessary for facial recognition could be concealed beneath the display itself, utilising a specialised transparent glass window. Industry analyst Ross Young believes this feature may debut on the iPhone 18 Pro but may still be under development by 2027, potentially resulting in the retention of a smaller Dynamic Island on the anniversary model.

Moreover, Apple is reportedly exploring a project known as “Project Bongo,” which would replace traditional physical buttons, including the Side and volume buttons, with solid-state equivalents. These buttons are designed to work seamlessly under various conditions, such as with gloves or wet hands, and are intended to provide haptic feedback even when the battery is depleted.

Camera and Battery Enhancements

Traditionally, Apple has partnered with Sony for its image sensors, but reports suggest that the upcoming anniversary model may feature a custom-built, Apple-designed stacked image sensor. This new sensor is said to incorporate LOFIC technology, allowing for a broader light capture and an enhanced dynamic range potentially exceeding 20 stops. Such improvements may lead to significant enhancements in photography capabilities, especially in challenging lighting conditions.

In terms of power management, Apple is said to be taking a significant step with the introduction of a silicon battery to replace the conventional lithium-ion batteries currently used in iPhones. This advancement could yield increased energy density and overall battery performance. There are rumours hinting that the battery capacity for the iPhone 20 could reach as high as 6000mAh, vastly improving user experience.

With the release of the iPhone 20 still over a year away, many of these projected features could evolve before the official announcement. However, if even a portion of these anticipated changes materialise, this new model is poised to deliver a substantial leap in innovation, reminiscent of the impact made by the iPhone X at its launch.
