In anticipation of the 2027 Assembly elections, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav is reportedly formulating a fresh political strategy for Uttar Pradesh. This approach combines elements of caste-based social justice with careful religious messaging, a concept that analysts are now referring to as “neo-socialism.” Central to this political framework is the SP’s PDA formula, which stands for Pichda, Dalit, and Alpsankhyak (backward classes, Dalits, and minorities). This strategy aims to forge a wide-ranging anti-BJP coalition by consolidating diverse social groups.

Unlike traditional socialist agendas typically associated with the SP, Yadav is incorporating visible aspects of Hindu faith. His approach seems intended to counter the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Hindutva narrative and prevent the polarisation of Hindu voters against the SP.

Integration of Spirituality and Cultural Practices

Akhilesh Yadav has begun to emphasize his connection with Hindu faith through various actions. Notably, he has referenced verses from the Hanuman Chalisa during celebrations of Bade Mangal, an important festival dedicated to Lord Hanuman. By focusing on temple issues and adopting religious symbols, he aims to present himself as an individual who is deeply rooted in Sanatana Dharma.

Political analysts interpret this newfound emphasis as a “soft Hindutva” strategy, characterised by cultural assertions rather than aggressive majoritarian politics. The objective appears to be reassuring Hindu constituents while maintaining the SP’s foundational support from the PDA communities. This strategy is geared towards preventing the BJP from leveraging the electoral contest for counter-polarisation ahead of the upcoming elections.

Additionally, Yadav’s recent discussions on astrology point to a deliberate blend of traditional cultural cues with contemporary political practices. He reportedly stated that he now seeks astrological advice before making critical decisions, even attributing past electoral successes to such guidance. These remarks serve to reinforce his developing identity as a leader who integrates modernity with traditional practices.

Internal Strategies and Media Management

Alongside shifting political messaging, Akhilesh Yadav has also focused on tightening internal party discipline. He has issued warnings to SP leaders regarding informal interactions with journalists, particularly cautioning against off-the-record comments that may hurt the party’s image. This move follows a controversy related to comments made about the West Bengal Assembly elections, where an SP leader allegedly mispredicted results that did not favour their party.

Such internal measures are seen as essential for maintaining party discipline and preventing rivals from exploiting internal dissent. Yadav’s careful management of media interactions reflects a strategic move to strengthen coherence within the party as election campaigning intensifies.

Yadav’s approach during the West Bengal elections further demonstrates his political prudence. Although part of the INDIA coalition, he chose to eschew active campaigning and later met Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata post-elections, where the BJP secured a considerable victory. Critics of Yadav, including members of the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party, dismissed his meeting as merely a ceremonial gesture.

Redefining Political Identity

Akhilesh Yadav’s evolving “neo-socialism” represents an attempt to harmonise different political currents: the caste dynamics of the PDA framework and the cultural appeal associated with soft Hindutva. This initiative seeks to widen the SP’s electoral appeal while preserving the support of minority communities.
