Ahmedabad Metro Expansion Approved with Five New Stations

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent approval of Phase 2A of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project by the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, signifies a crucial advancement in enhancing urban transport in Gujarat. This expansion is set to establish a direct link from Koteshwar Road to Ahmedabad Airport, thereby improving connectivity within the city’s metro framework. The project encompasses a total distance of 6.032 km and includes five new stations.

The newly planned stations for the corridor will consist of Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar, and the Airport station. Four of these will be elevated while one will be located underground, contributing significantly to the metro network. Upon its completion, the entire Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro system will extend to a total of 77.63 km of operational routes.

This initiative is part of broader urban mobility strategies aimed at developing a modern, efficient, and sustainable public transport system in the region. The project is designed to cater to the growing transportation needs of the city’s residents and visitors.

Projected Costs and Timelines

The estimated total expenditure for the Phase 2A corridor stands at Rs 2,169.04 crore, which incorporates the Interest During Construction (IDC). This funding is part of the city’s comprehensive efforts to enhance its urban transport capability. One significant aspect of this phase is its direct connection to Ahmedabad Airport, providing a quicker transportation alternative for travellers and lessening reliance on personal vehicles and taxis.

The extension aims to improve mobility for residents from nearby residential and commercial zones that currently have limited public transport access. It is anticipated that the new corridor will bolster the local economy by facilitating better access to various critical locations in the city.

Upon completion, this segment of the metro is expected to address the pressing issue of traffic congestion that plagues many urban areas, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional road transport.

Impact on Urban Mobility and Economic Growth

The planned corridor is designed to integrate seamlessly within the existing Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network. By connecting vital residential areas, commercial centres, and transport hubs, this project aims to facilitate more efficient commuting across Ahmedabad. As a result, it is projected to shorten travel times significantly.

In addition to enhancing mobility, this expansion is expected to spur future developments, including projects linked to forthcoming events like the World Police Games in 2029 and the Commonwealth Games in 2030. Officials highlight that the metro extension will encourage residents to switch from road transport to public transit, thereby contributing to a decrease in traffic volumes and improving overall road safety.

Beyond alleviating congestion, the expansion is anticipated to bring environmental advantages, as metro systems are typically considered a cleaner mode of transport. The authorities hope that this project will contribute to reduced carbon emissions related to private vehicles and fossil-fuel transport operations, thereby promoting a more sustainable urban mobility future.

Social and Employment Benefits

Aside from its economic implications, the metro expansion is likely to increase access to reliable and affordable public transportation for diverse socio-economic groups. By offering a dependable travel option, the project aims to mitigate transport disparities and enhance accessibility to employment, education, healthcare, and other essential services.

The Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A initiative is also poised to create job opportunities throughout both its construction and operational phases. Government projections estimate that approximately 2,000 jobs will be generated during the construction phase and around 500 jobs in operations and maintenance. This employment generation reflects a significant investment in the city’s future.

Overall, the expansion of the Ahmedabad Metro is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the city’s development, promising improved airport connectivity, urban mobility, and sustainable environmental practices as Ahmedabad continues to grow.
