19-Month-Old Child Allegedly Loses Vision Due to Medical Error in Madhya Pradesh

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 19-month-old child has allegedly lost his eyesight following a suspected medical error at a government hospital in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district, prompting authorities to order an investigation into the incident.

The child’s family has accused a doctor at the Civil Hospital in Banda of administering incorrect medication during treatment, leading to a rapid deterioration in the toddler’s condition. Health officials have constituted a committee to examine the allegations.

Family Alleges Wrong Medication Was Administered

According to a complaint filed by the child’s father, Indraj Vishwakarma, the incident occurred on May 29 when he took his son, Vinay Vishwakarma, to the Civil Hospital in Banda after the child developed symptoms of a cold along with redness in the eyes.

After obtaining an outpatient department slip, the child was examined by the doctor on duty.

The father alleged that during treatment, the doctor administered what he described as “saline nasal drops” into the child’s eyes. He further claimed that the child was also prescribed other medicines, including paracetamol syrup, an injection and additional medication.

The allegations have not yet been independently verified, and the findings of the official inquiry are awaited.

Child Referred To Higher Medical Centres

According to the family, the child’s condition worsened within a few hours of receiving treatment.

The father stated that despite remaining at the hospital for several hours, there was no improvement in his son’s condition.

The child was subsequently referred to the district hospital in Sagar and was later advised to seek treatment at a higher medical facility.

The family then took the toddler to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhopal for specialised care.

Family Claims AIIMS Doctors Reported Permanent Vision Loss

The father alleged that specialists at AIIMS Bhopal informed the family that the child had suffered permanent loss of vision.

According to the complaint, doctors indicated that the condition may have resulted from incorrect treatment or possible medical negligence.

Following the development, Indraj Vishwakarma lodged a complaint at the Banda police station and sought action against the doctor and any other hospital staff found responsible.

He told authorities that although he did not know the doctor’s name, he would be able to identify the individual.

Health Department Orders Investigation

Block Medical Officer Yogendra Khatik said the Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) had constituted a committee to investigate the allegations.

He stated that further action would be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.

The family has demanded a fair and impartial investigation into the incident and has called for strict action against those found responsible if negligence is established.

Officials are expected to review medical records, treatment procedures and statements from those involved as part of the probe.
