18,000 Indian Seafarers Deployed in Gulf Amid Rising Tensions, Safety Measures Intensified

The CSR Journal Magazine

Nearly 18,000 Indian seafarers remain actively deployed across the Gulf, as the Indian government monitors their safety in light of rising tensions in West Asia. The Shipping Ministry spokesperson, Opesh Sharma, provided updates on the current status and movements of merchant vessels navigating the crucial Strait of Hormuz.

Despite escalating security issues, Indian-flagged vessels are reportedly making successful transits through the Strait. Recently, ten Indian-flagged ships alongside five foreign vessels have crossed this vital waterway, a notable achievement amid the ongoing unrest.

The statement from the government follows a string of attacks targeting Indian-crewed vessels in the Gulf. These incidents have reportedly claimed the lives of three Indian sailors in the previous week, raising concerns about the safety of crew members in the region.

Recent Developments in Maritime Operations

In a significant operational success, the Indian vessel Disha has safely navigated the Strait of Hormuz carrying 62,370 tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG). It is anticipated that Disha will arrive in India on June 18, contributing to the country’s energy supply stability.

Officials indicated that approximately 325 Indian seafarers are currently aboard ships operating west of the Strait, while over 200 others are reportedly stranded in the Gulf of Oman. Continuous communication and surveillance measures are in place to ensure their safety during these uncertain times.

The Shipping Ministry affirmed its commitment to providing essential assistance to Indian crew members and ship operators in the region, further strengthening its efforts to safeguard its maritime interests.

Safety Measures and Regional Developments

The ministry confirmed incidents involving the Hong Kong-flagged oil and chemical tanker Bochem Marengo, which was reportedly attacked by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) while passing through the Strait of Hormuz on the night of June 12-13. All 21 Indian crew members aboard the tanker have been reported safe and unharmed following this incident.

Officials have stated that the Indian government is in close contact with various shipping companies and maritime agencies to monitor developments in the region. The assurance of ongoing support for Indian seafarers affected by current tensions has been reiterated by the authorities.

India remains focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of its seafarers while safeguarding critical energy supply routes in this strategical shipping corridor. The commitment to an effective response to the evolving situation reflects the country’s prioritisation of maritime security.
