A significant change in tradition has unfolded in Rajasthan’s Pali district, as a 13-year-old girl has been officially recognised as the heir to a former royal lineage. Tejaswi Kumari Jodha was ceremoniously appointed under the traditional “Paag Ka Dastoor” on Thursday in Kherwa village, succeeding her father, Harish Chandra Jodha, who recently passed away. This event represents a major breakthrough in a custom historically reserved for male successors.

The ceremony occurred at the historic Kherwa Fort, which dates back to the 17th century, attracting hundreds of local villagers. This occasion marked a first in the region, as a girl was acknowledged as an heir within the customary Rajput succession practices. The anointing ceremony involved Vedic chants, observed as Tejaswi participated in the proceedings.

As part of the ritual, a ceremonial pink turban was placed on Tejaswi’s head, symbolising the end of mourning and taking on new responsibilities. This turban was reportedly sent by the former royal family of Jodhpur-Marwar, adhering to established traditions. Additionally, a tilak was applied to her forehead, in line with customary practices.

Community’s Role in Transition

The decision to designate Tejaswi as the successor was made collectively by community elders, acknowledging that her father had no male heir. This is significant, as the family had not conducted the ceremony in nearly 65 years due to the lack of a male heir, highlighting the importance of this particular event in the community.

Local residents have expressed their views on the decision, noting it as a progressive move that signifies evolving social attitudes. Villagers remarked how the community chose to maintain their traditions while also adapting them to contemporary notions of equality, indicating a broader shift in societal values.

Tejaswi, currently a Class 7 student, expressed her intentions to continue her education alongside embracing the responsibilities that have been entrusted to her. She conveyed her desire to work towards realising her father’s vision for the development of their village.

Significance of the Ceremony

The “Paag Ka Dastoor” is traditionally followed in areas once governed by the Jodhpur kingdom and signifies the transfer of leadership within a family after the demise of its patriarch. Historically exclusive to male heirs, this recent ceremony represents a pivotal change in these longstanding customs.

Community elders have recognised the ceremony as reflective of changing dynamics within their society. By choosing Tejaswi as the new heir, they have opened avenues for different interpretations of tradition that are more inclusive. This adaptation signifies a broader acknowledgement of women’s roles in cultural practices that were previously restricted.
