The CSR Journal Magazine

Zeenat Aman has expressed her support for Sonam Wangchuk, an educator and climate activist who is currently on an indefinite hunger strike in Delhi. In a recent Instagram post, Aman highlighted that Wangchuk is entering the 17th day of his protest, which has drawn considerable attention due to concerns regarding his wellbeing.

In her post, Aman referenced reports detailing Wangchuk’s deteriorating health, including noted loss of muscle mass and significant discomfort. She emphasized the urgency of the situation, stressing the need for the government to engage in dialogue with Wangchuk regarding his grievances. The actor’s message is part of a broader wave of support from various public figures who are advocating for Wangchuk’s cause at Jantar Mantar.

Sharing a photograph of Wangchuk, Aman mentioned a particular statement from him, where he reportedly declined to end his fast, insisting that the government should be the one to initiate dialogue. Her sentiments underline the importance of communication between citizens and authorities, especially in peaceful protests.

Recognition of Wangchuk’s Contributions

Aman highlighted Wangchuk’s various accomplishments, including his role as the founder of the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL). Furthermore, she pointed out his innovations, such as the ice stupa, which has garnered international attention for its impact on environmental sustainability.

Additionally, Wangchuk was acknowledged for his influence in the film industry, having inspired the character Phunsuk Wangdu from the film “3 Idiots,” portrayed by Aamir Khan. Aman praised Wangchuk’s dedication to educational reform and environmental activism, which has earned him numerous accolades both in India and abroad.

In her appeal to the government, Aman implored that action be taken concerning Wangchuk’s demands, asserting that it is vital for the future of the nation. She reminded her audience of India’s long-standing tradition of peaceful protest and the necessity for those in power to respond appropriately to such expressions of dissent.

Growing Support from Other Public Figures

The support for Wangchuk extends beyond Zeenat Aman, as other notable personalities have also rallied behind him. Actor Omi Vaidya, famed for his portrayal of Chatur in “3 Idiots,” shared a video urging viewers to pay attention to Wangchuk’s health and the issues related to his protest.

In his message, Vaidya expressed deep concern for Wangchuk, stating, “I don’t want Phunsukh Wangdu to die,” and encouraged greater awareness around the topics Wangchuk is advocating for. His viral video has helped to amplify the urgency of the situation and generated further public interest in Wangchuk’s cause.

Wangchuk’s protest, which began on June 28, is led by the Cockroach Janta Party, which has accused the education system of irregularities, specifically relating to the NEET examination. The group is calling for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and for monetary compensation for families affected by the controversy, amounting to Rs 1 crore for those alleged to have taken drastic measures following the exam irregularities.

In response to the growing momentum of their demonstration, the group has planned a peaceful march to Parliament, slated for July 20, coinciding with the opening of the Monsoon Session. The protest aims to draw attention to their concerns and demand immediate action from the government as the situation unfolds.
