Yellow Alert Issued for Delhi as Rain Causes Widespread Waterlogging

The CSR Journal Magazine

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi on Friday, July 10, following extensive rainfall the previous day. The warning signifies the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning, and light to moderate rain in isolated areas throughout the national capital.

This alert comes after Delhi and its surrounding regions experienced heavy rains on Thursday, July 9, resulting in waterlogging and traffic disruptions across various locations. Commuters faced difficulties as they navigated through severely flooded underpasses amid the heavy downpour.

Latest forecasts from the IMD, released at 9:30 am, indicate that residents can expect a generally cloudy sky with light rain in the morning. The afternoon and evening may bring moderate showers along with occasional thunderstorms. Predicted temperatures for the day range between 32°C and 34°C, with a minimum of around 26°C.

Impact of the Rainfall

The yellow alert serves as an advisory, urging residents to stay aware of potentially disruptive weather conditions. While the warning does not suggest extremely severe weather, it calls attention to the possibility of localised waterlogging, traffic delays, and strong winds.

Authorities have highlighted the risk of minor disruptions, which may include slight traffic interruptions and brief power outages. The IMD has also advised the public to take precautions such as avoiding sheltering under trees and staying clear of power lines. Residents are encouraged to check traffic updates prior to travelling.

Following Wednesday’s rains, which marked the first significant monsoon spell since its delayed arrival on July 2, the conditions have brought newfound relief from the oppressive humidity. However, the rainfall has also led to significant disruptions in Delhi-NCR, with reports of waterlogged roads, traffic blocks, and fallen trees across various parts of the city.

Rainfall Data and Expectations

Rain activity is expected to continue on Friday, prompting the IMD to advise residents to remain vigilant. While the heavy downpours observed on Thursday are not forecasted to persist throughout the city, short bursts of intense rain are still likely.

As residents prepare for potential further rain, it remains crucial to stay updated with the IMD advisories and local weather reports to ensure safety and ease of travel throughout the capital.
