Rohit Saraf To Start Filming Heer Ranjha In September

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rohit Saraf is scheduled to commence shooting for the film Heer Ranjha during the first week of September, as reported by Variety India. The project is directed by Sajid Ali, renowned for his previous work on Laila Majnu, with the screenplay crafted by his brother, celebrated filmmaker Imtiaz Ali.

New Leading Actress Cast

Imtiaz Ali reportedly stepped back from his own directorial project to focus on finalising the screenplay for Heer Ranjha. Initially, there were indications that Sara Arjun would be cast opposite Saraf; however, the filmmakers have opted for a new actress to join the cast instead.

The announcement regarding Heer Ranjha was made on Valentine’s Day this year, following the unexpected success of Sajid Ali’s earlier film, Laila Majnu. Despite a lukewarm reception during its initial release in 2018, the film gained significant attention and became a surprise hit after being re-released last year. The new film is being produced by Ektaa R Kapoor and aims to retell the timeless story of love.

In the months leading up to the September shooting, the project has progressed steadily, with efforts concentrated on finalising both the screenplay and the casting. This film will be Saraf’s next significant role as a romantic lead, building on his performances in Dear Zindagi, Ludo, The Sky Is Pink, and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari. He is also currently engaged in the production of the fourth season of his web series, Mismatched, where he stars alongside Prajkta Koli.

Background of the Ali Brothers

Imtiaz Ali’s recent directorial effort, the Partition-themed drama Main Vaapas Aaunga, featured a talented cast that included Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina, Sharvari, and Diljit Dosanjh. The film garnered both critical acclaim and box office success. Meanwhile, Sajid Ali’s last directorial venture, Woh Bhi Din The, released in 2024, starred Rohit Saraf, Adarsh Gourav, and Sanjana Sanghi, and was available on a streaming platform.

As the onset of filming approaches in September, attention is particularly focused on the identity of the newly selected leading lady and whether the production team can successfully recreate the dynamic that led to Laila Majnu’s unexpected acclaim. The challenge lies in meeting the high expectations set by previous works.

Filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and the roles played by both Saraf and the new actress will be critical in determining the film’s reception. The creative team is poised to deliver a captivating rendition of this classic narrative, aiming to engage audiences just as effectively as their earlier projects.
