On Thursday, Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, called for the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He attributed the police’s alleged actions against students during the protests on July 20 in Delhi to Shah’s leadership. Kharge emphasised that the Home Minister should take responsibility for the incident, seek forgiveness, and step down from his position.

During discussions in the Upper House, Kharge strongly condemned both Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their silence regarding the protests. He cautioned that if the government continues to disregard the concerns of students, they might respond by making their grievances known once more.

Kharge claimed that Amit Shah was directly accountable for the violence shown towards students amidst the protests. He asserted that Shah should not attempt to evade responsibility or maintain distance from the events by staying behind closed doors.

Calls for Transparency and Educational Reforms

In addition to demanding Shah’s resignation, Kharge urged the government to present a clear account of the events that transpired on July 20 to Parliament. He expressed concern over the lack of transparency and accountability surrounding the incident. Furthermore, he proposed the introduction of a time-bound annual academic calendar aimed at preventing uncertainties that could affect students’ education and prospects.

Kharge’s remarks highlighted a growing sentiment that the current administration is not addressing students’ issues adequately. His call for reform in educational administration, particularly regarding scheduling, suggests a need for systemic change to foster a more conducive environment for students.

Political Tensions Escalate in Parliament

The discussions in Parliament took a heated turn following Kharge’s comments regarding associations between the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and educational institutions. He demanded the removal of individuals linked to the RSS from these positions, asserting that their presence jeopardises the integrity of education.

These allegations elicited immediate and strong objections from members of the treasury benches, resulting in a turbulent atmosphere during the session. Members from both sides expressed their discontent vocally, leading to further disruptions in the proceedings.
