Woman Dies Under Mysterious Circumstances in Gwalior; Family Alleges Dowry Harassment

The CSR Journal Magazine

A recently married woman from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, lost her life under suspicious circumstances, with her family alleging that her death was linked to dowry harassment. The deceased, Palak Rajak, reportedly made a distressing phone call to her father just twenty minutes prior to her death, begging him to rescue her from her in-laws’ house. While her family contends that she was a victim of continuous abuse, her in-laws claim that she took her own life.

Palak’s marriage took place on April 14, 2025, to Amit Rajak, who works as an outsourced employee with the Air Force. According to the family, they had provided a substantial dowry, including jewellery and a motorcycle, yet the in-laws allegedly continued to demand further items such as a car and a gold chain. Reports suggest that fixed deposit receipts given as part of the dowry were reportedly cashed by her in-laws.

Family members described an alarming situation where Palak faced ongoing harassment after her marriage. They alleged that she was isolated within the household and was often denied food. Her father recounted that during their last conversation on the night of May 12, she expressed desperation and fear, stating, “They keep demanding a car and a gold chain. They are harassing me continuously. These people will kill me.”

Circumstances Surrounding Her Death

Following the phone call, Palak’s father assured her that he would send her brother to bring her back home. Reports indicate that within twenty minutes, her husband, Amit, contacted her family to inform them that Palak had allegedly hanged herself. Upon arrival at the residence, family members tragically discovered her deceased. They noted visible injury marks on her neck and other parts of her body, which has led to suspicions regarding the circumstances of her death.

In response to the incident, enraged relatives staged a protest, blocking roads and demanding a thorough investigation. They requested videography of the post-mortem examination as well as a forensic analysis to ensure a comprehensive examination of the case. Palak was reportedly active on social media and had a following of approximately 10,000, which highlights her presence in the community.

In contrast to these claims, her in-laws assert that Palak locked herself in a room. Her father-in-law, Babulal, is reported to have told the police that upon returning home from the market, he was informed by his younger son that Palak was unresponsive and not opening the door. After breaking down the door, they allegedly found her hanging, leading to a rushed attempt to save her. However, medical professionals pronounced her dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Ongoing Investigation and Authorities’ Response

The local police have acknowledged the seriousness of the case, particularly given that it occurred within a year of marriage. Senior police officer Robin Jain stated that the allegations made by Palak’s family are being taken seriously. A detailed investigation is currently underway, which will involve reviewing the post-mortem report, conducting medico-legal examinations, and examining forensic evidence along with statements from relatives.

The police’s diligent approach reflects the growing concern regarding dowry-related violence in India. As investigations progress, authorities aim to clarify the circumstances surrounding Palak’s death and ensure that justice is served. Despite conflicting narratives from both families, the focus remains on uncovering the truth behind this tragic incident.
