West Bengal Elections See 89.99 Percent Voter Turnout Till 5 PM in Second Phase

The CSR Journal Magazine

The second phase of the assembly elections in West Bengal has reportedly achieved a voter turnout of 89.99 per cent by 5 pm, as stated by the Election Commission. This level of participation reflects a significant engagement from the electorate in the democratic process.

Among the districts, Purba Bardhaman led the way with a notable turnout of 92.46 per cent. Other districts followed closely, with Hooghly recording 90.34 per cent, Nadia at 90.28 per cent, Howrah at 89.44 per cent, and North 24 Paraganas, which also demonstrated enthusiastic voter participation. South 24 Paraganas reported a turnout of 89.74 per cent, and 89.57 per cent was recorded elsewhere.

Political parties are interpreting this high turnout as a positive indicator for their respective fortunes. In the earlier phase of the elections, held on April 23, the voter turnout was recorded at an impressive 91.78 per cent.

Key Districts and Contesting Parties

The second phase of the elections covers 142 of the 294 seats in West Bengal, with over 2.22 crore voters eligible, including 1,64,35,627 men and 1,57,37,418 women. Key constituencies in this phase include Bhabanipur and Tollyganj, where significant political narratives are taking shape.

In the previous elections of 2021, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) performed strongly in this region, securing 123 of the 142 seats being contested. The TMC is anticipated to focus its efforts on maintaining its stronghold in these traditional bastions in South Bengal and Kolkata, aiming for a fourth consecutive term for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sees this phase as an opportunity to penetrate urban voters, particularly among the “bhadralok” community and the Matua group. Both parties are optimistic about their chances based on the turnout, which they believe favours their narratives.

Looking Ahead: Exit Polls and Counting of Votes

The exit polls are set to be released later today, once the polling concludes at 6 pm. These polls will provide a glimpse of the possible electoral outcomes based on the trends observed throughout the voting process.

Vote counting is scheduled for May 4, which will be a crucial day for both parties as they await the final results. The anticipation around who will emerge victorious in this contentious political landscape continues to build, marking a significant moment in West Bengal’s electoral history.

As this electoral contest progresses, the dynamics within West Bengal politics are increasingly under scrutiny, with both the TMC and BJP keenly aware of the importance of these elections in shaping the future governance of the state.
