West Bengal CM Announces Transfer of 27 Km Land to BSF for Fencing

The CSR Journal Magazine

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari declared that the state is prepared to transfer 27 kilometres of land for fencing purposes along the Indo-Bangladesh border. This announcement was made during a press conference held in Howrah on May 20. Adhikari confirmed that the government will also allocate land for border outposts and essential infrastructure for the Border Security Force (BSF).

Political Context of Land Transfer

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) included land allocation for border fencing in its manifesto, promising to implement this within 45 days of taking office. This measure is a key aspect of their strategy to curb illegal immigration from Bangladesh. Adhikari reiterated the importance of this initiative, stating, “We are ready to hand over 27 kilometres of land for fencing, along with a few Border Outpost lands and land for BSF infrastructure development.”

During his address, the Chief Minister criticised the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) administration, suggesting that their refusal to cooperate had jeopardised the safety of both the state and the nation. He alleged that past governments had not responded to requests from the BSF and the Government of India regarding land transfer for border security. Adhikari emphasised that a significant shift had occurred with the formation of the new government, which is prioritising national security.

In a strategic move, the BJP government approved the land transfer in its first cabinet meeting. Adhikari expressed optimism, stating that the process for land transfer would commence immediately and is expected to be completed within 45 days. He remarked that once the transfer is executed, the BSF will be able to expedite the completion of border fencing, addressing concerns related to illegal infiltration more effectively.

Government’s Commitment to Border Security

Chief Minister Adhikari’s announcement reflects a broader commitment from the state government towards enhancing border security. This initiative not only aims to facilitate the BSF in their operations but also seeks to reassure the public of the government’s dedication to managing cross-border issues. By transferring land for fencing and associated infrastructure, the administration is taking proactive steps to address long-standing challenges in border management.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister’s statements underscore the urgency of implementing border security measures, particularly in light of rising concerns about illegal immigration. Adhikari noted the ongoing discussions that had been stunted under the previous government, highlighting a renewed focus on collaboration between state and national authorities in safeguarding the border.

As the state prepares to undertake this land transfer, the government aims to create a more secure environment, which aligns with the national objective of controlling border crossings. This move is expected to generate significant support from local populations who have experienced the challenges associated with illegal migration.
