The CSR Journal Magazine

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has finalised the allocation of important portfolios among five ministers during a recent meeting with MLAs. This swift administrative decision follows the establishment of the new BJP-led government in the state. The allocation signifies a strategic move to streamline governance and ensure effective management of critical departments.

The senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh has been appointed to oversee the Rural Development, Panchayats, and Animal Resources Department. Ashok Kirtania will take charge of the Food Department, while Khudiram Tudu has been entrusted with the Backward Class Welfare Department. Agnimitra Paul will manage the Women and Child Welfare Department, and Nisith Pramanik will oversee North Bengal Development, along with the Sports and Youth Welfare portfolios.

This portfolio distribution occurs shortly after the new government was formed, indicating Adhikari’s promptness in establishing an administrative framework and delegating responsibility across various sectors.

Background of the Newly Assigned Ministers

Dilip Ghosh, a prominent figure within the BJP, has an extensive political background. His political career commenced as a full-time RSS pracharak, and he has been influential in cultivating the party’s grassroots organisation in West Bengal since 2014. Previously serving as a Member of Parliament representing Medinipur, Ghosh retains significant visibility in the political landscape of the state.

In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Ghosh won the Kharagpur Sadar constituency by a margin of 30,506 votes, securing a total of 89,885 votes against the Trinamool Congress candidate Pradip Sarkar.

Agnimitra Paul has transitioned from a successful career as a fashion designer to a notable political figure. She has previously led the BJP Mahila Morcha in West Bengal and has recently become the vice-president of the state unit. Paul stands out as the only female minister in the current Cabinet and retained her seat in the Asansol Dakshin Assembly constituency with a significant margin of 40,839 votes in the 2026 elections.

Political Landscape and Future Governance Plans

Ashok Kirtania, an MLA from Bangaon Uttar, represents the influential Matua community, which has emerged as a vital support base for the BJP in recent elections. He won his constituency by a decisive 40,670 votes, defeating his nearest rival from the Trinamool Congress.

Nisith Pramanik, previously affiliated with the Trinamool Congress, joined the BJP in 2019. He served as a Union Minister of State and emerged as one of the youngest ministers in the Modi government. Pramanik secured the Mathabhanga (SC) seat in the 2026 elections with a margin of 57,090 votes.

Khudiram Tudu represents the BJP’s increasing support in tribal areas. He emerged victorious in the Ranibandh (ST) constituency, obtaining 131,145 votes and defeating TMC’s Tanushree Hansda by a margin of 52,269 votes.

During its inaugural Cabinet meeting, the new government unveiled plans for various central schemes, including Ayushman Bharat, and announced reforms aimed at improving governance. These reforms also include measures to enhance transparency and strengthen welfare initiatives.

The Chief Minister emphasised the importance of good governance and reiterated the commitment to implement central policies across West Bengal efficiently. The Cabinet expressed gratitude to voters for ensuring a peaceful electoral process while pledging ongoing developments and security within the region.
