West Bengal Budget: Focus on Greenfield Airport near Kalyani and Rooftop Solar Initiatives

The CSR Journal Magazine

The BJP-led government in West Bengal, on June 22, revealed its first budget in the Legislative Assembly, marking a significant step in its administration. State Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta presented the budget for the Financial Year 2026-27, outlining various allocations and projects meant to enhance the state’s economy and infrastructure. The budget includes a total allocation of Rs 4,38,775.29 crore for the upcoming fiscal year.

During his address, Finance Minister Dasgupta highlighted the existing congestion at Kolkata Airport, noting the necessity for a second airport in the region. He mentioned that the government aims to identify between 1,000 to 1,500 acres of land near Kalyani for this new greenfield airport, which is expected to bolster the regional economy and accommodate growing air traffic.

Rooftop Solar Initiatives Announced

In alignment with the party’s electoral commitments, the West Bengal government plans to implement the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which aims to promote the use of rooftop solar power systems across the state. The initiative intends to install two lakh rooftop solar systems, contributing to both energy self-reliance and sustainability goals. A dedicated allocation of Rs 100 crore has been set aside for this solar project.

Additionally, Finance Minister Dasgupta stated that families from Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) would receive an extra subsidy of Rs 5,000 to support their power consumption. The government aims to foster greater adoption of solar energy, thereby making power more affordable for industries and aiding in the achievement of climate objectives.

To facilitate these goals, an Open Access policy is anticipated, allowing more efficient energy generation and distribution. The initiative also includes plans for the installation of grid-connected rooftop Solar PV power generation systems, backed by the aforementioned budget allocation.

Budget Presentation and Cultural Significance

The presentation of the budget was notably distinctive, as it was made using traditional Bengali mats and jute. This choice emphasizes West Bengal’s rich cultural heritage while serving as a reminder of the local craftsmanship. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta engaged in a puja before the budget was unveiled, marking a traditional start to the proceedings.

As the budget reflects the government’s vision for the future, it remains to be seen how these initiatives will impact the state in the coming fiscal year. The commitment to solar energy and infrastructure development highlights the administration’s focus on sustainable growth and community empowerment.

This budget marks a pivotal moment for the BJP government in West Bengal as it seeks to implement its policies effectively while addressing pressing developmental needs. With the emphasis on renewable energy and more efficient air travel, the government aims to lay the groundwork for a more robust economic future for the state.
