Weather Department Issues Rain Alert and Storm Warning for Delhi

The CSR Journal Magazine

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for certain regions of Delhi, foreseeing severe thunderstorms, lightning, and rain. The alert warns of squally winds reaching speeds of up to 100 kmph in the coming hours. This alert was communicated via a district-level nowcast released at 9.21 am on Tuesday, June 16, 2026.

Parts of Central Delhi, New Delhi, West Delhi, South West Delhi, and North Delhi are anticipated to experience severe thunderstorms coupled with light to moderate rainfall. Wind speeds in these areas may vary between 80 and 100 kmph, intensifying the potential for hazardous conditions.

The IMD also predicts moderate thunderstorms in East Delhi, Shahdara, North East Delhi, and South Delhi, along with adjacent regions. Gusty winds are expected to reach speeds of 60 to 80 kmph in these areas, posing risks to residents and infrastructure.

Safety Advisories for Residents

Furthermore, individuals are urged to keep a safe distance from electric poles and water bodies when lightning occurs. These precautions are intended to safeguard the public from potential injuries related to lightning strikes and related debris.

This weather warning follows a recent incident the previous day, where strong dust storms and gusty winds disrupted normal life across Delhi and the National Capital Region. During this event, Palam recorded wind speeds of up to 92 kmph, significantly lowering visibility and affecting daily routines.

Monitoring and Response Measures in Place

The IMD’s current nowcast is set to remain valid until 12.21 pm, and meteorological conditions in various parts of the city are expected to shift rapidly. In response, local authorities are monitoring the situation closely to address any potential disruptions.

Concerns have been raised regarding potential traffic disruptions, fallen trees, and localised waterlogging in lower-lying areas if the thunderstorms are accompanied by heavy rainfall. Authorities are preparing for adverse impacts and are set to deploy necessary measures to ensure public safety.

Residents are advised to stay updated on weather conditions through official announcements and to adhere to safety guidelines issued by the IMD and local authorities. The proactive dissemination of information is deemed crucial for minimizing risk and enhancing public awareness during this weather event.
