Uttar Pradesh: Baghpat District Launches Keychain Alarm for Enhanced Women’s Safety

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a significant initiative aimed at improving women’s safety, the administration of Baghpat district in Uttar Pradesh has unveiled a keychain safety alarm designed for personal use. This compact device, easily portable in a purse or attached to keys, serves as a protective measure for women in potentially dangerous situations. The alarm emits a loud sound and activates a flashing light when triggered, drawing attention from those nearby in instances of distress.

Official Launch and Distribution

The launch event took place under the guidance of Baghpat District Magistrate Asmita Lal, who personally distributed the devices to women employees at the Collectorate office. According to officials, the alarm can produce continuous sound for nearly two minutes, with its sound carrying up to a distance of 50 metres. This feature facilitates a prompt response from bystanders who may assist in emergencies.

Each alarm is equipped with a built-in flashlight, allowing instant activation if a woman feels threatened while out in public or in an emergency. District Magistrate Lal emphasised the simplicity of operation, stating that women need merely to activate the device in the face of danger, alerting individuals nearby who can then offer assistance.

This initiative is implemented as part of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao programme, launched by the government to prioritise women’s welfare. Currently, the distribution of these alarms is focused on women employees within the Collectorate, although plans are in place to expand the initiative to include schoolgirls, working professionals, as well as workers from Anganwadi, ASHA, and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs). Additionally, those receiving the HPV vaccine will also be provided with these devices.

Community Response and Perceived Impact

The response from women who received the keychain alarms has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing that the devices provide an extra layer of security during their daily commutes or while at work. Recipients have noted the importance of feeling safe in their surroundings and highlighted the role of the alarm in empowering them to engage in educational and professional pursuits without fear.

A healthcare worker who obtained the device commented on its practicality, remarking that women often feel vulnerable when away from their homes. She stated that being able to activate the alarm when sensing danger could significantly aid in alerting others, making a supportive environment more accessible in urgent situations.

The overall sentiment reflects a collective understanding of shared responsibility in ensuring women’s safety. Initiatives such as this not only aim to provide immediate assistance during emergencies but also strive to foster an environment in which women can pursue education and employment opportunities with greater confidence and assurance.
