Uttar Pradesh Achieves Over 50,000 Rooftop Solar Installations for Three Consecutive Months

The CSR Journal Magazine

Uttar Pradesh has marked a significant achievement as it became the first state in India to surpass 50,000 rooftop solar installations for three consecutive months—March, April, and May 2026—under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGY). This milestone highlights the state’s leading role in advancing the country’s rooftop solar initiative.

As of June 2026, over 6.2 lakh households across Uttar Pradesh have benefited from the rooftop solar programme. This accomplishment constitutes over 50 per cent of the state’s goal of integrating solar systems into 11.27 lakh households, positioning Uttar Pradesh among the top-performing states within the national framework.

Currently, Uttar Pradesh accounts for nearly 17 per cent of all rooftop solar installations nationwide. The achievement is indicative of the effectiveness of the state’s policies and the robust implementation of the solar initiative.

Government’s Commitment to Expediting Solar Installations

During a review meeting, Ravinder Singh, the Director of the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), commented on the state’s exceptional performance. He emphasised the importance of maintaining this momentum by converting every eligible application into a completed installation to secure the lead in cumulative household solarisation.

To support this goal, officials have been instructed to accelerate loan approvals and to promptly disburse sanctioned loans. They have also been advised to engage inactive vendors, introduce new vendors as needed, and minimise the unnecessary rejection of applications to facilitate the installation process.

The speed of installations has notably increased in recent months. Daily rooftop solar installations rose from approximately 500 in June 2025 to nearly 2,100 by May 2026. Significantly, the latest batch of 50,000 installations was completed within just 22 days, marking the quickest pace of installation recorded in India.

Economic and Environmental Benefits Realised

The PMSGY has contributed over 2,000 MW of rooftop solar capacity to Uttar Pradesh’s energy infrastructure, greatly enhancing the state’s clean energy capabilities. The programme not only aims to bolster renewable energy generation but also delivers considerable economic advantages.

Estimates suggest that the rooftop solar sector generates business worth ₹40–50 crore daily and has created employment for more than 80,000 individuals in various roles, including manufacturing, installation, and maintenance services. This growth is crucial not only for energy independence but also for local economic development.

Officials are also tasked with collecting and sharing data on the electricity bill savings realised by programme beneficiaries. This information is intended to motivate more households to adopt rooftop solar systems. The rapid progress is attributed to a combination of strong policy support, effective execution, and an expanding network of vendors, further reinforcing the state’s commitment to renewable energy.
