USS Rafael Peralta Intercepts Iranian-Flagged Ship, Reports CENTCOM

The CSR Journal Magazine

The United States Central Command has confirmed that the guided-missile destroyer USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115) successfully intercepted an Iranian-flagged vessel on April 24. The ship was reportedly making attempts to sail towards a port in Iran when American naval authorities initiated an intervention to halt its progress. This action led to the boarding of the vessel by the destroyer’s crew, who subsequently conducted an investigation.

Broader Maritime Enforcement Strategies

This interception is part of a larger enforcement strategy being implemented by the United States. During a press briefing on April 21 at the Department of War, General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, provided insights into the ongoing interdiction operations. He affirmed the United States’ commitment to enforcing a robust maritime blockade against Iran, reiterating that the military is prepared for major combat operations if directed by the President.

General Caine highlighted that the blockade covers all commercial vessels navigating to and from Iran. This military action was initiated under the direction of the President and the Secretary of Defence. Alongside the Department of Justice, US military forces are actively conducting maritime interdiction operations targeting sanctioned vessels and those associated with the “dark fleet,” a campaign that commenced on April 8.

As of April 21, General Caine reported that thirty-four ships had encountered the US blockade and had opted to turn back. He referred to the recent seizure of the motor vessel Touska, which followed several warnings leading to its boarding by US Marines under CENTCOM orders.

Significant Recent Interdictions

The US military has been involved in additional significant operations in the Indo-Pacific region. Notably, on April 20, forces intercepted the motor tanker Tiffany, which was transporting roughly 2 million barrels of sanctioned Iranian oil. This operation was succeeded by another on April 22, wherein a stateless tanker known as Majestic X, or Ponix, was seized in the Indian Ocean under similar circumstances.

Both the Tiffany and the Majestic X, along with their respective crews, are currently in US custody. General Caine stated that the United States will continue to conduct maritime interdiction operations in the Pacific and Indian Oceans against Iranian vessels and those associated with the ‘dark fleet.’

General Caine further clarified that US Central Command maintains a stringent blockade covering all ports. He assured that the military is closely tracking vessels of interest approaching or departing from Iran, particularly those that were outside the blockade area when it was ordered. He affirmed that US forces are ready to intercept such vessels as required.

Historical Context and Remembrance

In a poignant moment during the briefing, General Caine reflected on the history of regional tensions, specifically recalling the victims of the bombing of the US Embassy in Beirut on April 18, 1983. He described this event as a significant moment in the context of attacks on American personnel.

General Caine expressed gratitude for the sacrifices made by those affected and specifically named four US service members who lost their lives in the incident. He commended the military leadership for its humility and dedication to ongoing operations, acknowledging the commitment and resilience of current personnel involved in maritime operations in the region.
