UPI Payment at Toll Booth Key Evidence in Suvendu Adhikari PA Murder Investigation

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent murder of Chandranath Rath, a close associate of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, has led investigators to a significant lead in the form of a UPI payment made at a toll booth near Kolkata. This payment, made by the suspects shortly before the crime, may assist the police in tracking the movements of the individuals involved. The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made over four days since the incident occurred.

Rath was fatally shot on the evening of May 10, 2026, near his residence in Madhyamgram, situated in the North 24 Parganas district. Reports indicate that his SUV was intercepted with a silver Nissan Micra blocking the vehicle approximately 200 metres from his home. When the car stopped, assailants on motorcycles reportedly opened fire at close range, fatally injuring Rath, who was in the front passenger seat.

Authorities believe that the operation was meticulously planned, as the assailants seemingly had precise knowledge of Rath’s seating arrangement. A senior officer from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) commented that the execution appeared swift and coordinated, suggesting a degree of professionalism in the attack.

Investigation Developments

In an effort to unravel the complexities of this case, police suspect that a group of at least eight individuals may have been involved in the incident, which included local associates who provided necessary logistical support. Two investigative teams have been dispatched to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where authorities believe some of the shooters may not be from West Bengal.

The police have seized the silver Nissan Micra that was used during the attack, along with two motorcycles identified as part of the getaway. Initial investigations indicate that both the red car and the motorcycles used by the attackers are stolen vehicles. In connection with the investigation, three individuals have been detained for questioning, as authorities work tirelessly to gather further evidence.

While the investigation continues, focus remains on identifying the individuals involved in the planning and execution of this brazen attack. The digital payment made at the toll booth could provide crucial information, enabling police to establish a clearer picture of the escape routes and identities of the suspects.

Community Response and Tributes

In response to the tragic death of Chandranath Rath, his body was taken to his native village of Kulup in the Purba Medinipur district. There, Rath was honoured with a tribute draped in the national flag, reflecting the respect and sorrow of the community. Rath, a former Indian Air Force personnel, was regarded as a close confidant of Chief Minister Adhikari.

The incident has stirred significant concern within local communities and political circles. Many are calling for strict measures to improve safety and security in the region, given the alarming nature of this targeted killing. Police have assured the public that all necessary efforts are being made to capture those responsible for Rath’s death.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities remain vigilant in pursuing leads while also considering the broader implications of the crime on political and social stability in West Bengal. Future developments in the case will be closely monitored by the media and the general public alike.
