The UK and France are gearing up for their fifth heat wave of the season, continuing a trend of extreme heat that has persisted across Europe since May. In France, Meteo-France, the national weather agency, has issued warnings that temperatures in the south-east could near 40°C starting Tuesday. The UK will implement an amber heat health alert for most of England also beginning Tuesday, with temperatures expected to rise to 36°C later this week.

Consequences of Extreme Temperatures Across Europe

The continuing heat has led to severe consequences throughout Europe, including major wildfires, prolonged drought conditions, the establishment of new national temperature records, and a concerning rise in heat-related fatalities. Reports indicate that extreme temperatures are on course to create thousands of additional heat-related deaths as the summer progresses.

The year 2026 is reported as the third hottest on record thus far, behind the years 2024 and 2025. However, scientists caution that with accelerated human-driven climate change and the influence of a significant El Nino phenomenon, 2026 may yet become the hottest year recorded by December. The European climate agency Copernicus noted last month that average sea surface temperatures reached an unprecedented 20.96°C for July in extrapolar oceans, surpassing the previous record of 20.89°C set in 2023.

In the same month, the global average surface air temperature was recorded at 16.90°C, marking it as the joint second warmest July on history, alongside July 2024. For Western Europe, the average temperature for June and July reached an unprecedented 21.62°C, exceeding the previous record set in 2022.

Impact of Climate Change on Weather Patterns

Experts attribute the extreme heat and accompanying drought conditions to persistent high-pressure systems that have effectively trapped heat over Western Europe. Samantha Burgess, strategic lead for climate at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, stated that the ongoing situation demonstrates how climate change exacerbates heat extremes. She explained that heat and drought conditions tend to reinforce each other, creating a vicious cycle.

May of this year marked a new record, as heat wave alerts were issued for the first time nationwide in France, with over half the country recording anomalously high temperatures. This trend continued into June, when the public health agency in France reported over 5,700 excess deaths attributable to extreme temperatures alone, with June 23 being recorded as the hottest day in France, reaching 44.3°C in the south-west.

The months of July also saw two additional waves of extreme heat, compounding a historic wildfire situation in the south-west of France. This calamity forced approximately 220,000 individuals to evacuate, ranking among the most significant evacuation efforts in Europe since World War II.

Challenges Faced by the UK Amidst Rising Temperatures

Although temperatures in the UK were relatively milder on Monday, the nation remains on high alert for its fifth heat wave this summer, which has been characterised by unusually hot and dry conditions. As of now, half of England and all of Wales are officially classified as being in drought, with the heat alert underscoring the potential strain on health services and an expected increase in mortality among the elderly and vulnerable populations.

Earlier unprecedented heat waves in May and June were linked to over 2,800 excess deaths attributed to extreme temperatures. The ongoing warnings in both the UK and France underscore a summer during which repeated heat waves, drought, and wildfires have significantly impacted large segments of Europe, as climate data suggests yet another extraordinary year for global temperatures.
