UIDAI Extends Deadline For Free Aadhaar Document Updates

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced an extension of the free online Aadhaar document update service, allowing users to amend their Aadhaar details without incurring charges until June 14, 2027. This move comes as a response to the positive feedback received from Aadhaar holders who have utilised this service. The original deadline for this facility was set to conclude in June 2026.

The decision reflects the government’s aim to facilitate easier access for individuals requiring updates to their Aadhaar information. As per the office memorandum issued on May 13, 2026, this additional year allows Aadhaar holders the flexibility to upload required documents online without any fee.

Through this initiative, the UIDAI aims to encourage more users to ensure their information is current and accurate, thereby enhancing the overall integrity of the Aadhaar system.

Free Online Document Update Service Details

The free update service exclusively applies to changes concerning proof of identity (PoI) and proof of address (PoA). Aadhaar holders requiring adjustments to their registered details can employ the myAadhaar portal for these updates. The UIDAI clearly stated that the facility allows users to refresh their records linked to Aadhaar, thus promoting greater convenience in managing one’s digital identity.

It is important to note that while the online service remains free, a fee of Rs 75 will apply for updates processed at physical Aadhaar enrolment centres. This aspect underscores the advantage of utilising the online service, which is both time-efficient and cost-effective.

UIDAI has emphasised the importance of using the myAadhaar portal, highlighting that it’s a streamlined approach to document updates without any financial burden until the new deadline arrives.

Guidelines for Updating Aadhaar Documents Online

Updating Aadhaar details online is a straightforward process that can be accomplished in just a few steps. Users need to visit the myAadhaar portal and log in using their Aadhaar number alongside an OTP for verification. Once logged in, they can upload scanned copies of the relevant identity and address proof documents.

After submitting the required information, users should secure the 14-digit Update Request Number (URN) generated by the portal. This unique number enables individuals to track the status of their application and confirms the successful submission of their update request.

The UIDAI’s focus on facilitating the updating process serves to encourage users to maintain accurate records, thus further reinforcing the effectiveness of the Aadhaar system.

Introduction of the New Aadhaar App

UIDAI has also announced plans for the imminent retirement of the current mAadhaar application, with users being transitioned to a new Aadhaar App. This update aims to provide a more secure and user-friendly experience.

The new Aadhaar App is set to include features like QR-based Aadhaar sharing and enhanced privacy settings, facilitating easier access to Aadhaar-related services. UIDAI intends for this new application to simplify digital identity management for users, ensuring that these services are not only accessible but also secure.

This initiative is part of UIDAI’s ongoing commitment to improve digital identity services, making them more efficient and reliable for every Aadhaar holder. The changes being implemented reflect a push towards evolving technological solutions in service delivery.
