Two Indian Crew Members on MV Hondius Under Observation After Hantavirus Outbreak

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Union Health Ministry has stated that two Indian crew members aboard the MV Hondius in the Atlantic Ocean are currently asymptomatic but remain under medical observation. This announcement comes in light of global concerns regarding a recent outbreak of hantavirus, a rare and serious infection. A senior official from the ministry emphasized that authorities are actively monitoring the situation, collaborating with both national health agencies and international organisations, including the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Details of the Outbreak

Preliminary reports from the WHO suggest that there are eight probable cases of hantavirus infection on board the MV Hondius, with five of these cases confirmed through laboratory testing. In addition, three fatalities have been linked to this outbreak. The WHO was made aware of the situation in the first week of May 2023, raising significant alarm regarding the health conditions on the ship.

The specific strain identified in the current outbreak is the Andes strain of hantavirus, which is noted for its limited capacity for human-to-human transmission. According to WHO assessments, the virus generally requires prolonged and close contact for effective spread. On May 6 and 7, the public health risk associated with this outbreak was classified as low, though it was acknowledged that additional cases could emerge due to the extended incubation period connected to the virus.

Reports indicate that the outbreak is believed to have begun with a Dutch couple who had extensive travel history in South America, including visits to Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile, before joining the cruise in April. Tragically, both individuals have since died, along with another person who had close contact with them, while at least five other passengers onboard have exhibited symptoms of the virus.

Government’s Vigilance and Response

The Indian government has assured that it is maintaining a vigilant stance towards the evolving situation and is determined to implement necessary public health measures. A health official remarked that the WHO continues to co-ordinate efforts internationally under the International Health Regulations (IHR). These efforts include bolstering diagnostic capabilities, facilitating epidemiological assessments, and ensuring safe disembarkation for passengers and crew members.

The official confirmed that the two Indian nationals aboard the vessel are being monitored in accordance with established international health protocols, highlighting that these individuals currently show no symptoms of the virus. Nevertheless, government health agencies conducted a review meeting to evaluate the situation and improve preparedness measures as a precautionary strategy.

As concerns rise about the potential spread of hantavirus infections, the Indian authorities are committed to taking proactive steps to protect the health and safety of citizens. They are also coordinating closely with international partners and organisations to ensure a comprehensive response to the outbreak.
