Khuzdar Remains Under Lockdown in Balochistan

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Khuzdar police administration has stated that the lockdown in Khuzdar remains in effect, contrary to claims circulating on social media suggesting it has been lifted. According to a report from The Balochistan Post, officials declared these claims to be entirely false and baseless. They emphasised that the current restrictions would persist until the administration provides further notice.

Residents of Khuzdar have been instructed to adhere to the imposed lockdown, which is in place daily from 8 pm until 10 am. The police administration urged both traders and the local population to cooperate fully with the authorities during this period of enforced restrictions.

The lockdown was introduced as part of broader security measures implemented across Balochistan. Authorities have mandated local shopkeepers to close their businesses during the designated hours, thereby ensuring compliance with the lockdown guidelines.

Similar Measures in Other Districts

In addition to Khuzdar, several districts in Balochistan have also faced similar restrictions. Curfews have been imposed in areas such as Surab, Kalat, Mastung, and Nushki, where markets have been instructed to remain closed. Residents in these districts are similarly advised not to leave their homes during the evening hours.

Furthermore, in Turbat and Quetta, authorities have enacted Section 144, which includes prohibitions on pillion riding. This measure is part of efforts to enhance local security in response to ongoing concerns over safety in the region.

During Pakistan’s national day celebrations on August 14, mobile phone and internet services were suspended throughout Balochistan, further highlighting the administration’s stringent control over communication channels during critical periods.

Ongoing Human Rights Concerns in Balochistan

Balochistan continues to grapple with serious issues regarding enforced disappearances and human rights violations. Reports indicate that while some individuals have been released, others remain in prolonged detention, with some allegedly being victims of targeted killings. This environment has fostered growing insecurity and mistrust among local populations.

Concerns surrounding arbitrary arrests and the lack of accountability have exacerbated instability in the region. These issues have hindered efforts aimed at fostering peace and fostering public confidence in state institutions.

Human rights organisations have frequently highlighted the problem of enforced disappearances in Balochistan, labelling it one of Pakistan’s most pressing and unresolved human rights dilemmas. Families of missing individuals continue to demand greater transparency regarding their loved ones’ fates and whereabouts, illustrating the ongoing strife within Balochistan’s socio-political landscape.
