Trump Calls PM Modi a ‘Good-Looking Guy’, Says Indian Leader Is a Tough Negotiator

The CSR Journal Magazine

US President Donald Trump praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their interaction on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France on Wednesday, describing him as a “good-looking guy” and one of the toughest negotiators he has dealt with. The remarks came as the two leaders held talks in Évian-les-Bains amid discussions on trade, energy and geopolitical issues.

Trump’s comments, which combined light-hearted observations with praise for Modi’s negotiating skills, drew attention from the international media gathered at the summit and added another chapter to the close personal rapport the two leaders have displayed over the years.

Trump Highlights Modi’s Personality and Negotiating Skills

Speaking during the interaction, Trump said Prime Minister Modi’s pleasant demeanour often concealed his approach at the negotiating table.

“He’s a tough negotiator,” Trump said, while also describing the Prime Minister as a “good-looking guy” and complimenting his personality.

The US President suggested that Modi’s calm public image could be misleading, saying the Indian leader was considerably tougher in negotiations than many people expected.

Similar remarks have been made by Trump in the past, with the US President frequently portraying Modi as a strong and effective leader.

Longstanding Personal Bond

The latest comments reflected the close relationship the two leaders have built over the years through a series of high-profile engagements.

Trump has often referred to events such as the “Howdy Modi” rally in Houston in 2019 and the “Namaste Trump” programme in Ahmedabad in 2020 as examples of the strong ties between India and the United States and his friendship with the Indian Prime Minister.

Their meeting in France marked their first face-to-face interaction in more than 16 months and came at a time when both countries are working towards concluding a broader trade agreement.

Remarks Draw Attention at G7 Summit

Trump’s comments attracted widespread attention among journalists covering the summit, where leaders are discussing major economic, security and geopolitical issues.

The interaction between Modi and Trump took place against the backdrop of efforts by New Delhi and Washington to deepen cooperation in areas including trade, energy security and regional stability.

The latest exchange underscored the importance both countries attach to maintaining strong bilateral ties amid a rapidly changing global environment.
