The CSR Journal Magazine

The University of York is preparing to launch its campus in Mumbai after receiving formal approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC). This initiative aligns with India’s National Education Policy 2020, which aims to enhance the country’s higher education landscape. The campus is set to commence student enrolment for its first intake in 2026.

The campus will offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, focusing on areas such as business, computer science, and artificial intelligence. The approach will integrate interdisciplinary learning with practical industry exposure, fostering an environment that encourages innovation and entrepreneurship among students.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan officially announced the approval, alongside Vice-Chancellor Professor Charlie Jeffery. The University of York aims to align its training with current market demands, prioritising skills relevant to emerging sectors like digital technologies.

University of Bristol to Establish Mumbai Enterprise Campus

The University of Bristol has also received its Letter of Approval for the establishment of an Enterprise Campus in Mumbai. This development signifies a significant collaboration in the field of higher education between India and the UK. The inaugural cohort is anticipated to start in August 2026 at Cignus Powai.

The new campus will introduce programmes in data science, economics, finance, and immersive arts. It will focus on research-driven teaching methodologies and partnerships with local industries and educational institutions, including IIT Bombay and Tata Consultancy Services.

The initiative aims to enhance the employability of its students by offering hands-on experiences through internships and real-world projects. This aligns closely with the increasing demand for industry-ready graduates in technology and science sectors.

University of Liverpool to Open Bengaluru Campus

The University of Liverpool has recently secured approval to set up a campus in Bengaluru under the framework of the National Education Policy 2020. This announcement was made during an event attended by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, reflecting a commitment to bolstering international academic partnerships.

The Bengaluru campus is expected to promote research collaboration and skill development in key emerging fields. This initiative is indicative of India’s efforts to solidify its reputation as a global education centre and to enhance cooperative efforts between Indian and UK universities.

With a strong emphasis on future technologies, the campus will likely facilitate joint research initiatives and innovation programmes. Partnerships with local industries are expected to enrich the practical learning experiences for students, aligning academic offerings closely with the needs of various sectors.

Framework for Approvals Under NEP 2020

The University Grants Commission is responsible for granting approvals to foreign universities under the National Education Policy 2020. This structured framework assesses institutions based on academic credibility, global rankings, and financial health, ensuring regulatory oversight while allowing for flexibility in operations.

As India increases its openness to foreign educational institutions, the focus is on creating a competitive academic environment that could enhance quality and accessibility of education for students in cities beyond the major metros.

This move is anticipated to significantly impact student autonomy and preferences, offering international degree opportunities within India and potentially decreasing student migration for education abroad. The entry of these three UK universities marks a pivotal moment in reshaping India’s higher education landscape.
