Andy Burnham has officially taken office as the 59th Prime Minister of the United Kingdom following Keir Starmer’s resignation on July 20. In his inaugural address, he emphasised the need for Britain to demonstrate its ability to regain stability, stating that this is a critical challenge for his government. Burnham’s elevation to the prime ministership follows a significant period marked by political upheaval, making him the seventh leader since 2016.

The ceremony took place at Buckingham Palace where King Charles III formally invited Burnham to assume his role, an event traditionally referred to as ‘kissing hands’. Shortly thereafter, Burnham, accompanied by his wife Marie-France van Heel, arrived at 10 Downing Street to address the nation, acknowledging the public’s weariness of ongoing political instability.

In his speech, Burnham articulated his awareness of the dissatisfaction among citizens, stating, “I know people at home are fed up with politics. I hear you, and I want to be honest with you – we have not been good enough and we need to be better.” He positioned himself as a revolutionary figure, pledging to bring about significant changes, which he claimed would be the most substantial in the last four decades.

Call for a New Political and Economic Model

Burnham’s address reflected a decisive departure from the current economic and political consensus that has prevailed since the 1980s. Drawing on his experience as a metro mayor advocating for regional devolution, he vowed to dismantle the centralised Westminster model that has dominated British politics.

He remarked, “A new political model and a new economic model. In the 1980s Britain took some wrong turns.” Citing historical context, he expressed the need for a shift from the centralised political power and the privatisation of economic resources that have negatively impacted various regions. This, he suggested, was essential for restoring prosperity across the country.

Burnham’s vision includes a more collaborative political atmosphere, aiming to address problems through teamwork rather than political rivalries. He is committed to redistributing power to local communities, stating that he intends to end the concentration of authority in Westminster.

Future Plans and Immediate Measures

Looking ahead, Burnham announced that he will introduce a comprehensive cross-party plan for national renewal, expected later this year. This 10-year roadmap will outline a vision for the nation’s progress. However, he indicated that he would implement immediate measures to assist with the rising cost of living starting the following day.

Burnham assured the public that the forthcoming economic adjustments will be in line with fiscal responsibility. He guaranteed that these initiatives would aim not only to alleviate short-term financial pressures but also to maintain commitments to fiscal rules and defence obligations. He remarked, “That is the fair and sustainable way to bring the welfare bill down.”

In terms of long-term reform, Burnham expressed his intent to create a “preventative state” that prioritises investment in individuals’ success over managing systemic failures. He outlined plans to support the youth, promising enhanced pathways into employment by reforming the education system and increasing access to essential mental health services.

By committing to these measures, Burnham highlighted that positive change for younger generations is a priority that will begin immediately, stating, “That work starts now.” This declaration underlines his focus on fostering a more resilient and empowered population for the future.
