TMC Rift Erupts In Halishahar Municipality As 16 Councillors Resign Together

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Halishahar Municipality in West Bengal has experienced significant turmoil following the collective resignation of 16 Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillors, who submitted their resignations at the Barrackpore Sub-Divisional office. This move has raised concerns about the stability of local civic bodies across the state.

Sources indicate that the councillors decided to resign in unison due to mounting dissatisfaction with the local leadership, exacerbated by the party’s recent electoral setback. Allegations have emerged that senior party leaders, including the local Member of Parliament Partha Bhowmick, neglected to engage with the councillors or address their grievances following the election results.

Political Implications in Barrackpore Subdivision

This mass resignation follows a similar episode in the neighbouring Kanchrapara Municipality, suggesting a potential widening of fissures within local political structures in the Barrackpore subdivision. Among those who stepped down, five are women representatives, highlighting the breadth of the discontent.

Notably, the Chairperson of Halishahar Municipality, Shubhankar Ghosh, did not resign, remaining in office and indicating that divisions exist within the civic leadership. The formal announcement of the resignations was made by Sudipta Das, the MLA for Bijpur Assembly, which encompasses Halishahar.

Despite the upheaval, Sudipta Das sought to reassure the public regarding the continuity of municipal services. He stated, “I want to assure the public that municipal services will not be impacted. General services for the citizens will continue to function normally despite these changes.” This statement was aimed at alleviating concerns about the operational integrity of the municipality.

Underlying Issues of Dissatisfaction

The decision to collectively resign was reportedly finalised during a meeting of TMC councillors in Kalyani on Sunday. This development has stirred speculation regarding potential internal conflicts and the level of discontent among grassroots leaders, especially in light of the recent electoral outcomes in the region.

Political analysts believe that these resignations could have significant repercussions for local governance and alter political dynamics in the Barrackpore belt, particularly with upcoming civic and assembly elections on the horizon. The rapid shift created by the resignation of these councillors is likely to amplify pressures on the ruling party to mitigate dissent and refocus efforts on organisational cohesion.
