Ritabrata Banerjee, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly and a rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA, stated that his faction has completed the submission of all necessary documents to the Election Commission of India. He expressed confidence that they would receive official recognition for their faction. Banerjee emphasised that the party’s organisational structure and its elected representatives remain aligned with his group.

Concerns Over Frozen Accounts and Interest Distribution

Banerjee discussed the ongoing issue surrounding the Enforcement Directorate’s decision to freeze the accounts of the TMC. He claimed that the annual interest generated from these accounts is already exceeding Rs 1,000 crore. He raised questions regarding the distribution of this interest, asserting that it should benefit the party’s grassroots workers instead of being collected by influential figures within the party. “Is the interest meant for the aunt and nephew to pocket, or should it reach the workers at the grassroots level?” he questioned.

He insisted that his faction does not intend to take a condescending stance regarding compensations but wishes to clarify the rightful allocation of these funds. Banerjee reaffirmed that his group is ready to cooperate with the Election Commission, promising to provide any further documentation as required.

In terms of financial transparency, he stated that if given access to the party’s accounts, his faction would disclose all expenditure details to the public every three months, reinforcing their commitment to accountability. He asserted, “The entire organisational structure and the elected representatives are with us.” He mentioned the National Working Committee led by Arup Roy and assured that their first course of action would include financial assistance of Rs 10,000 per month to the families of the martyrs commemorated on July 21.

Ongoing TMC Faction Dispute and Parliamentary Protests

These statements come amidst the continuing dispute regarding the legitimacy of the rebel TMC faction and its claims for formal recognition. Recently, several opposition parties conducted a symbolic walkout during an all-party meeting called by the Central Government ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. This protest was mainly due to the invitation extended to the National Citizens Party of India (NCPI), which the opposition alleged violated parliamentary norms.

The opposition accused the government of improperly facilitating the merger of the rebel TMC MPs with the NCPI, claiming that this had not been authorised by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. After this gesture of protest, opposition leaders returned to the meeting, labelling their walkout as a demonstration of dissent.

The Monsoon Session of Parliament commenced on Monday, with the Lok Sabha Speaker granting separate seating arrangements for twenty MPs who have separated from the TMC. Despite this, the merger of the rebel TMC members with the NCPI is still pending approval from the Speaker. The developments indicate ongoing tensions within the TMC and the broader implications for West Bengal’s political landscape.
