The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) protest against Congress leaders culminated in a violent altercation with Students’ Federation of India (SFI) members in Shimla on July 22. The BJP was demonstrating in response to the Congress’s actions near the Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi. The SFI activists, already engaged in a hunger strike outside the Deputy Commissioner’s Office at CTO Chowk, were aiming to highlight concerns regarding alleged NEET examination paper leaks.

While the BJP voiced its disapproval of Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, SFI members continued their protest demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. As both groups converged near the Deputy Commissioner’s office, tensions escalated, leading to a physical confrontation that required police intervention to restore order.

Allegations from Both Sides

Following the clash, representatives from both sides accused each other of instigating the violence. Vivek Birsanta, the SFI Himachal Pradesh State Secretary, claimed that their protest was peaceful until BJP workers allegedly attacked them while they were advancing towards the Deputy Commissioner’s office. Birsanta emphasised the SFI’s commitment to their hunger strike over the NEET issues and declared that their peaceful agitation would persist until necessary accountability was achieved.

On the opposite side, Balbir Verma, the BJP’s Vice-President in Himachal Pradesh, asserted that their protest had been sanctioned by local authorities. He accused supporters of Congress of purposefully attempting to disrupt the BJP’s demonstration. According to Verma, the BJP had secured permission from the district administration for their protest, scheduled between 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm, and condemned the disruptive actions of the opposition.

Verma further critiqued the Congress party for its protests in New Delhi, alleging that these demonstrations had led to public property damage and calling for an inquiry. His comments included accusations that the Chief Minister should focus more on issues within Himachal Pradesh rather than backing Congress protests.

Ongoing Political Tension and Response

This incident in Shimla reflects a broader climate of political unrest that has been amplified by recent nationwide protests from opposition parties and student organisations regarding the NEET paper leak situation. The tensions between the BJP and Congress parties underscore the ongoing struggle for political influence in the current landscape.
