Three in a Row: Hockey Jharkhand Continue Winning Run

The CSR Journal Magazine

Hockey Jharkhand has reinforced its prowess in women’s hockey by winning the Gold Medal at the 16th Hockey India Sub Junior Women National Championship held in 2026. This victory marks the third consecutive title for the team, following triumphs in 2024 and 2025, establishing Jharkhand as a formidable player in the junior hockey scene in India. Significant investments in hockey infrastructure over the past decade have been vital to this success, particularly with the development of astroturf facilities.

Between 2014 and 2026, the state has constructed numerous astroturf fields, significantly enhancing its hockey facilities. Simdega has two astroturfs, while Khunti also boasts two. Ranchi is equipped with several facilities, including those at Bariatu, Hatia (Railway), AG Complex, and Morabadi, where an existing turf was renovated. Additionally, Hazaribagh, Jamshedpur, and Gumla have also seen development, with a total of six astroturf fields now operational or under construction, facilitating the nurturing of hockey talent throughout the state.

Medal Achievements Demonstrate Strong Development System

Over the past 16 years, Jharkhand has created a well-structured youth development system that has translated into impressive performances at the Hockey India National Championships, particularly in women’s events. The state has achieved an impressive tally of 34 medals in women’s competitions, which includes 10 Gold, 11 Silver, and 13 Bronze medals, showcasing the effectiveness and depth of its grassroots programs.

The Junior Women’s team has earned 14 medals, comprising 5 Gold, 5 Silver, and 4 Bronze, while the Sub Junior Women’s team has accumulated 12 medals with 4 Gold, 5 Silver, and 3 Bronze, including the latest championship victory. This consistent success at the junior and sub-junior levels has ensured a solid pathway for players progressing through the ranks to the senior level.

Simdega as a Hub for Women’s Hockey Talent

Simdega district has emerged as a crucial development center for Indian women’s hockey, especially in recent years. The representation of the Jharkhand team at the Hockey India Women’s Sub-Junior National Championship 2026 underscores the district’s contribution to youth hockey. Key players such as Sandeepa Kumari, Pushpa Manjhi, Preeti Biluung, Regina Kullu, Saniya Tirkey, and Nipunata Kullu have highlighted the district’s success in nurturing talent.

From 2016 to 2026, Simdega has consistently produced standout athletes for both Senior and Junior levels of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team. Several notable players, including Indian captain Salima Tete and others, have emerged from this district, contributing significantly to the national side.

Continued Success Across Men’s and Women’s Programs

While the women’s hockey program has received notable attention, Hockey Jharkhand has also achieved commendable results in men’s competitions, securing 4 medals in the Hockey India Sub Junior Men National Championships. This dual success reflects the comprehensive approach that Hockey Jharkhand has employed in fostering talent across genders.

Bhola Nath Singh, Secretary General of Hockey India and President of Hockey Jharkhand, acknowledged the achievements of young players and the consistent efforts of coaches and support staff. The commitment to strengthening the youth system remains a priority, with aspirations for players to excel not only in national competitions but also to represent India at the international level.
