The Indian Under-18 men’s and women’s hockey teams were greeted with enthusiasm at the Delhi airport on Monday following their commendable performances at the U-18 Asia Cup 2026 held in Japan. The men’s team emerged victorious, clinching the gold medal, while the women’s team secured a bronze medal, marking a successful outing for both squads.

Men’s Team Dominates Final Match

The Indian men’s team was crowned champions after demonstrating a commanding performance in the final against the host nation, Japan, winning the match 4-1 at Kakamigahara on Saturday. Ashish Tani Purti made headlines with a remarkable hat-trick, scoring in the 2nd, 28th, and 34th minutes. Captain Ketan Kushwaha also contributed with a goal in the 30th minute, while Numada Gaku managed to score Japan’s only goal.

Head Coach Highlights Preparation and Teamwork

Head coach Sardar Singh credited the team’s preparation and unity as key factors in securing the championship. “I am elated with the performance. Despite limited preparation time of 1-2 months, the team’s execution of plans was outstanding,” he stated. Singh emphasized the importance of team bonding, which he believed played a crucial role in their success.

Acknowledgment of Individual Performances

Player of the Match Ashish Tani Purti remarked on the team’s resolve throughout the tournament, affirming their determination to overcome any opponent. “I am very pleased with our performance. Our unified goal was to defeat every team we faced, particularly Japan on their home turf,” he said.

Women’s Team Concludes Campaign on a High Note

The Indian women’s U-18 team capped their campaign successfully by defeating Korea 3-0 to claim the bronze medal. Goals were scored by Sandeepa Kumari, captain Sweety Kujur, and Nousheen Naz, showcasing the team’s attacking capabilities and defensive strength throughout the tournament.

Women’s Captain Reflects on Valuable Learning Experience

Captain Sweety Kujur mentioned that the team learned important lessons during their matches. “We performed well overall, but ultimately fell short in some moments due to pressure. Our coach emphasized discipline and mutual support, which are crucial for our growth,” she explained. Looking ahead, Kujur expressed the team’s ambition to aim higher in future tournaments.

Coaching Staff Encouraged by Potential for Future

Head coach Rani Rampal recognized the experience gained by the young players during the event. “We had aimed for the title, considering our preparations. However, participating in a semi-final was a new milestone for these athletes, and achieving a podium finish is a significant encouragement for future competitions. Many of these players have the potential to compete in the 2032 and 2036 Olympics,” she mentioned.

Recognition from Hockey India

In acknowledgment of their outstanding performances, Hockey India announced monetary rewards to both teams. Each member of the gold medal-winning men’s team will receive Rs 3 lakh, while each member of the support staff will be awarded Rs 1.5 lakh. The bronze medal-winning women’s team members will receive Rs 1 lakh each, and Rs 50,000 for the support staff.
