The CSR Journal Magazine

Om Kumar Yadav, a promising hockey player from Rajnandgaon in Basantpur, Chhattisgarh, has made headlines by being the sole player from his state to secure a spot in Hockey India’s ongoing U-18 National Coaching Camp at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Bhopal. His selection followed an outstanding performance at the 16th Hockey India Sub Junior Men National Championship 2026 – Division ‘B’, held in Rajgir, Bihar, where he scored six goals.

Inspiration from Family

Inspired by his elder brothers, Rinku and Arjun Yadav, who are currently training at the Lucknow Hockey Centre of Excellence, Om Kumar started playing hockey at the age of six. He shared that his journey into the sport began by watching Rinku play. “Hockey has always been my passion. Once I saw my brother play, I knew I wanted to follow in his footsteps,” he stated. His love for the sport has only grown since those early days.

A Role Model in Harmanpreet Singh

Young Yadav looks up to Harmanpreet Singh, the captain of the Indian Men’s Hockey Team and a two-time Olympic Bronze medalist. He expressed admiration for Harmanpreet’s ability on the field, specifically his quick decision-making and skillful play. “His technique and style motivate me to improve my own game. Watching him has been truly inspiring,” Yadav noted.

Preparation for Success

In the lead-up to the national championship, Yadav trained diligently at the Khelo India Centre in Bilaspur, where he benefited from the coaching of former Olympian Ajit Lakra. His focus and dedication to the sport were clear as he aimed for a place in the U-18 National Coaching Camp. Now, he finds himself among elite company, hoping to impress the coaches and secure a position in the squad.

Training Under Sardar Singh

At the camp, with Sardar Singh serving as head coach, Yadav is keen to showcase his skills. He is hopeful about being selected for the 24-player team that will compete in the U-18 Asia Cup in Kakamigahara, Japan, scheduled from May 29 to June 6. He will also have the opportunity to face off against Australia’s U-18 teams from May 11 to 21.

Insights from the Training Camp

Reflecting on his initial days at the camp, Yadav mentioned, “It has been a rewarding experience since we joined just five days ago. Interacting with Sardar Singh has been invaluable. We are currently focusing on fundamental skills while also learning new techniques. He provides us with constructive feedback, helping me to enhance my personal game.” This coaching environment is pivotal for him as he works towards his aspirations.

Aiming for a Future in Hockey

Determined to represent India at an international level, Yadav is committed to refining his gameplay. He is particularly focused on improving his passing skills and finding space on the field. Through hard work and dedication, he aims to establish himself as a player who can make waves in the sport, especially coming from a state with less recognition in hockey.
