TET Paper Leak: Police Launch Hunt for Key Accused Bijendra Gupta

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) paper leak investigation has significantly progressed with the identification of Bijendra Gupta as the purported mastermind behind the operation. Gupta, who is based in Samastipur, Bihar, is currently on the run, prompting Maharashtra Police to conduct extensive raids across multiple states to locate him.

Law enforcement officials have indicated that Gupta has been operating examination paper leak networks for approximately 25 years. Reports suggest that he has been implicated in various examination fraud cases over the years and has previously managed to evade capture. The recent identification has reignited interest in an undercover sting operation conducted by India Today in Patna in 2024, in which Gupta was featured.

This sting operation revealed Gupta’s involvement in a vast network linked to numerous significant recruitment exam leaks, including the 2023 Odisha Staff Selection Commission (OSSC) examination and exams conducted by both the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) and the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission (MPPSC).

Details of the Alleged Paper Leak

The TET paper leak was brought to light when Bhiwandi Police received intelligence about a group from Delhi and Haryana who had allegedly travelled to Mumbai to negotiate the sale of the question paper ahead of the examination. Following this tip-off, law enforcement conducted a sting operation in the Kongaon area of Thane district, leading to the arrest of three suspects named Akash, Rajiv, and Dheeraj.

During the operation, police recovered four sets of question papers from these individuals. Upon interrogation, the trio ostensibly disclosed Gupta’s involvement in orchestrating the leak, consequently directing attention towards him as the alleged mastermind. Investigative findings suggest that the paper was being sold through lucrative deals reportedly involving crores of rupees.

Investigators are now exploring Gupta’s extensive network, which appears to involve multiple accomplices across different regions. The investigation is anticipated to expand as authorities seek further leads to apprehend Gupta and dismantle his network.

Examination Postponed Amidst Ongoing Investigation

In the wake of these allegations, the Maharashtra government has postponed the TET examination, originally slated for June 28, 2026. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced the establishment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to delve deeper into the matter. This decision reflects the seriousness of the situation and aims to ensure a thorough investigation.

Officials from the Education Department are currently assessing whether the materials seized during the operation include the actual TET question paper or potentially a mock variant. The findings of this verification process will determine the subsequent course of action. This evaluation is crucial to ascertain the integrity of the TET examination and the implications of the alleged leak.

Furthermore, Maharashtra Police have broadened their investigation beyond state lines, forming teams to investigate potential links in Delhi, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana. This multi-state initiative underscores the serious nature of the allegations and the widespread implications of the case. As the investigation unfolds, further developments are anticipated.
