Will Personally Come to Your House”: Tamil Nadu Minister Aadhav Arjuna Warns Against Child Marriage

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Tamil Nadu Cabinet Minister Aadhav Arjuna has raised significant concerns about the alarming rate of teenage pregnancies in certain regions of Tamil Nadu. During his speech at the 26th Summer Festival in Jawadhu Hills, Tiruvannamalai district, he labelled the current scenario as “deeply distressing.” His remarks came during an event emphasising the importance of education for girls across the state.

Arjuna highlighted the potential impact of education on empowering young girls, noting that with adequate opportunities, they could eventually assume roles of leadership, including the position of Chief Minister, as exemplified by former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. He reiterated the government’s commitment to advancing quality education for all girls and conveyed a message from Chief Minister Joseph Vijay to this effect.

Focus on Child Marriage and Legal Enforcement

In his address, Arjuna specifically pointed out that child marriage remains a significant issue, particularly in northern Tamil Nadu, where a lack of education among women perpetuates the practice of early marriages. He firmly warned against the marriage of girls below the age of fourteen: “If anyone marries off a girl below the age of 14, I will not wait for the police. I will personally come to your house,” he stated, underlining the government’s seriousness regarding this issue.

This firm stance on child marriage reflects a broader concern within government circles about the welfare of young girls and the need for legislative action to prevent such practices. Arjuna’s statement aims to establish clear consequences for those who disregard existing laws surrounding marriageable age and child welfare.

The minister further articulated the government’s plans to create a political landscape that is increasingly favourable to women and youth, emphasising that the upcoming political change in Tamil Nadu, expected in 2026, will largely be driven by these demographics. In his role as the minister responsible for Tiruvannamalai district, he expressed a commitment to addressing various issues affecting local communities.

Government Initiatives and Development Projects

Minister Aadhav Arjuna detailed several ongoing initiatives aimed at tackling local challenges, including women’s education, agricultural development, infrastructure improvements, and combating drug abuse, particularly in northern Tamil Nadu. He acknowledged that many of these issues have been neglected for years and have pending resolutions in courts.

Additionally, the minister conveyed optimism regarding the future employment landscape in Tiruvannamalai district. He expressed confidence that, within the next five to six years, the government would generate enough local job opportunities, thereby reducing the need for residents to migrate to other states in search of work.

The event also saw the participation of Tourism Minister Rajesh Kumar as the chief guest, while District Collector Vandana Garg presided over the function. Upon their arrival, the ministers received a traditional welcome accompanied by ceremonial music. They also had the opportunity to view exhibits creatively made from vegetables, illustrating local craftsmanship.

During the festival, development projects valued at Rs 65 crore were inaugurated by various government departments, aimed at improving local infrastructure. Welfare assistance was also distributed to several beneficiaries, further highlighting the government’s ongoing commitment to community development.
