Sushmita Dev Resigns from Rajya Sabha, Deals Fresh Blow to TMC Amid Internal Turmoil

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) suffered another significant setback on Wednesday as Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev resigned from the Upper House and formally severed ties with the party. Her departure comes just two days after senior TMC leader Sukhendu Sekhar Roy also resigned from both the Rajya Sabha and the party, intensifying concerns about unrest within the Mamata Banerjee-led organisation.

Dev’s resignation marks the second exit from TMC’s parliamentary ranks in less than a week and has sparked fresh debate over the party’s internal stability and future political strategy.

Resignation Sparks Political Speculation

In her resignation letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan, Dev sought immediate acceptance of her resignation. Shortly afterward, she stated that she did not want to be “in two boats at the same time,” indicating that her decision was linked to a broader political shift. However, she has not yet publicly revealed her future plans.

Her resignation has triggered speculation about a possible change in political affiliation, particularly after reports and visuals emerged showing her meeting Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Neither Dev nor the BJP has officially commented on any potential move.

A Prominent Face of the TMC

Sushmita Dev joined the Trinamool Congress in 2021 after leaving the Congress party. The daughter of veteran Congress leader Santosh Mohan Dev, she previously represented Silchar in the Lok Sabha and later became one of TMC’s prominent national faces.

During her tenure in Parliament, Dev actively participated in debates on social welfare, women’s rights, and governance issues. She also served as an important spokesperson for the party at the national level.

Her exit is being viewed as a notable loss for the TMC, given her visibility and influence beyond West Bengal.

Challenges Ahead for Mamata Banerjee’s Party

The consecutive resignations of two Rajya Sabha MPs have added to the challenges facing the TMC at a crucial political juncture. Political observers believe the departures could weaken the party’s voice in Parliament and raise questions about internal cohesion.

While TMC leaders have yet to make detailed public remarks on Dev’s resignation, the development underscores the growing pressure on the party leadership to maintain unity and retain influential leaders. The coming weeks are expected to provide greater clarity on both Dev’s political future and the broader implications for the Trinamool Congress.
