On August 8, 2026, in New Delhi, Supriya Sule, a prominent leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar), expressed her opposition to the existing version of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) Bill. During her remarks, she advocated for a thorough debate on the legislation and recommended that it be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for consideration. Sule emphasised that foreign contributions to organisations dedicated to supporting underprivileged children should not face excessive restrictions.

She asserted that foreign funding aimed at assisting vulnerable populations is commendable and called upon the Indian government to take a more moderate and guiding approach regarding the FCRA Bill. Her comments reflect the ongoing debate within political circles about the impact of such regulations on non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and charitable initiatives.

Sule stated, “We oppose the current form of the FCRA Bill. There should be a discussion on this Bill and it should go to a Joint Parliamentary Committee. If the Government wants to have a discussion, then we are ready on FCRA.” This statement underscores her commitment to addressing the complexities surrounding foreign aid to charitable organisations.

INDIA Bloc’s Collaborative Efforts

In her discourse on the functioning of the INDIA alliance, Sule mentioned the regular meetings held by leaders of the coalition, which operates under the leadership of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. She disclosed that these meetings occur daily at 10 am, allowing the alliance to advance in alignment with Kharge’s directives.

Sule remarked, “We move forward in the direction that Kharge Sir gives us.” This collaboration among various political leaders highlights the alliance’s concerted efforts in preparation for future electoral contests. She pointed out that while government regulations apply broadly, there are inconsistencies, particularly in matters such as administrative oversights regarding paper leaks.

In addressing the ongoing protests by students in Jharkhand, Sule expressed her concern for the welfare of students pursuing education, asserting that they should not endure adverse treatment. She noted, “What happened at Jantar Mantar should not happen anywhere in the country,” indicating a need for more supportive and constructive responses to student issues.

Political Dispute and Electoral Symbols

Regarding the political dispute surrounding the Shiv Sena’s election symbol and the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray, Sule contended that the symbol rightfully belongs to Thackeray. She explained that the party was originally founded by Balasaheb Thackeray, who appointed Uddhav as his successor.

Sule remarked, “The symbol in Uddhav ji’s case belongs to Uddhav ji only,” reiterating the historical context of party leadership and ownership. Her comments reflect ongoing tensions within political factions and the significance of symbols in electoral contexts.

Additionally, the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, aims to establish a Designated Authority responsible for overseeing foreign contributions and managing assets of entities with lapsed, surrendered, or cancelled FCRA registrations. The legislation seeks to preserve the religious character of worship places among such assets and proposes to reduce penalties for violations from five years to one year.

According to figures from the Ministry of Home Affairs, from 2019 to 2022, 13,520 entities received foreign remittances totalling Rs 55,741 crore. As of July 15, 2026, there were 14,449 active FCRA registrations in India, while 22,498 had been cancelled and 15,212 had expired. These statistics underline the regulatory framework’s reach and impact on NGOs and charities operating within the country.
