Former West Bengal Minister Sujit Bose Sent to Ten-Day ED Custody in Municipal Recruitment Scam Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Bankshall Court in Kolkata has ordered former West Bengal Minister Sujit Bose to be held in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for ten days. This decision follows his arrest on May 11, in connection with allegations surrounding a municipal recruitment scam. The court granted custody after the ED requested it to facilitate further interrogation regarding purported irregularities in municipal job appointments.

Bose was apprehended late on Monday night as part of an ongoing investigation into significant discrepancies in the hiring processes for municipal positions in West Bengal. The ED alleges that these irregularities have led to illegal monetary gains, prompting their inquiry under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Post-arrest, Bose underwent a mandatory medical examination at Bidhan Nagar Hospital on the morning of May 12, before being presented in court. The legal proceedings have drawn attention to the broader implications of the case in the context of recruitment-related corruption within the state.

Family Expresses Faith in Legal Recourse

Following the court’s ruling, Samudra Bose, the son of Sujit Bose, addressed the media, expressing the family’s intention to pursue legal options. He affirmed their trust in the judiciary and remarked that, despite the challenges, they were prepared to navigate them through appropriate legal channels.

Samudra Bose emphasised that his father’s name does not feature in any list pertaining to predicate offences. He noted that the ED has already submitted relevant statements to the court, and he refrained from further commentary due to the sub judice status of the case.

He conveyed that Sujit Bose had cooperated with the investigation by attending summons from the ED prior to his arrest. The family maintains that they respect the processes of law and are committed to working through them.

Details of Alleged Corruption and Ongoing Investigations

The allegations against Sujit Bose focus on purported manipulation in the recruitment of candidates for municipal roles. Reports suggest that he may have recommended nearly 150 individuals for various municipal positions in return for financial benefits. This has raised concerns about the integrity of the recruitment process, with investigators claiming that merit-based selection protocols were overlooked in favour of financial transactions and personal influences.

In the course of the ED’s investigations, officials have reportedly identified proceeds of crime associated with the alleged municipal recruitment scam. This highlights the agency’s commitment to uncovering the full extent of corruption in public appointments in West Bengal.

The arrest of Sujit Bose aligns with a larger enforcement initiative by the ED targeting irregularities in recruitment practices across the state. The scrutiny has intensified, with multiple cases of suspected corruption under investigation, further complicating the political landscape in West Bengal.
