In a major development surrounding the ongoing fallout of the 2024 RG Kar Medical College and Hospital tragedy, former Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislator Nirmal Ghosh was arrested on Thursday from a luxury hotel in Puri, Odisha. Ghosh, a former MLA representing the Panihati constituency, stands accused of ordering the hurried cremation of the deceased junior doctor referred to in court and public discourse as “Abhaya” on the night of August 9, 2024. Sources in the police confirmed that a team from the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate executed the arrest and is bringing him back to West Bengal.

Fresh Complaint Triggered Immediate Action

The arrest follows a new written complaint lodged by the victim’s father on August 10, 2026, marking two years since the brutal crime occurred. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had recently instructed law enforcement agencies to initiate fresh proceedings into alleged procedural lapses and cover-ups surrounding the disposal of the body.Beside Ghosh, the newly filed complaint names two other individuals: former municipal councillor Somnath Dey and Sanjib Mukhopadhyay.

According to the allegations, Ghosh used his political influence on the night of August 9, 2024, to prioritize the victim’s cremation at the crematorium ahead of other pending bodies. The complaint further alleges that the victim’s family members were barred from signing the official crematorium register, and that Ghosh and his associates placed their signatures on the legal documentation instead.
