Southwest Monsoon Arrives Over Mumbai, IMD Issues Orange Alert

The CSR Journal Magazine

The southwest monsoon has officially commenced over Mumbai, as confirmed by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). On Tuesday, June 23, 2026, the city experienced heavy rains accompanied by lightning. The IMD has initiated an orange alert for Mumbai, indicating the likelihood of severe thunderstorms, gusty winds reaching up to 40 kmph, and substantial rainfall.

Recent weather reports indicate a significant increase in precipitation across the region. Coastal Konkan and Mumbai have reported intensified rainfall, with the town of Murud receiving approximately 150 mm and Ratnagiri around 147 mm. The weather revival has extended inland, impacting areas such as Alibaug, Nagothane in Raigad, Tamhini Ghat, and regions near Pune.

Meteorologists have linked this surge in rain to a strong atmospheric system situated over the Arabian Sea, supported by potent westerly winds, favourable outgoing longwave radiation (OLR), and an offshore trough. Unlike the sporadic pre-monsoon showers in previous weeks, Mumbai is now witnessing persistent heavy rain.

Delayed Monsoon Arrival Ends Dry Spell

This marks a significant shift for Mumbai, which experienced its driest start to June in nearly twenty years. The monsoon season’s arrival on the Kerala coast was postponed, followed by an additional two-week delay along the western coast due to weakened oceanic winds. This dry period resulted in rising daytime temperatures and alarmingly low levels in local lakes.

The heavy rains on Tuesday indicate the end of this stagnation, with the primary monsoon current now effectively taking hold. The IMD declared the onset after meeting specific criteria, including adequate rainfall at key monitoring stations such as Colaba and Santacruz, as well as widespread coverage and a sustained shift to moisture-laden westerly winds.

Strong southwesterly winds have now settled along the coast, breaking the dry atmospheric barrier that had persisted for the preceding two weeks. Nonetheless, some interior areas like Thane have reported relatively uneven and drier conditions as the full impact of the westerly winds continues to develop.

Future Weather Expectations

The current orange alert suggests that the intensity of rainfall is expected to peak over the next 24 to 48 hours, providing essential relief to the region. However, a developing low-latitude system over the Bay of Bengal could temporarily diminish the westerlies, leading to uneven rainfall distribution across North Konkan, Thane, Palghar, and Mumbai’s catchments until around June 27–28.

The IMD has indicated that favourable conditions for the further advance of the monsoon into various parts of the north Arabian Sea, Gujarat, additional regions of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and parts of Madhya Pradesh are expected over the next two to three days. Following this, the monsoon is anticipated to extend into the remaining areas of Jharkhand and Bihar, reaching parts of Uttar Pradesh in the next three to four days.

For now, the monsoon has officially arrived in Mumbai, promising much-needed rain after a prolonged dry spell.
