The Congress high command has approved the expansion of the Karnataka Cabinet, led by D. K. Shivakumar, enabling the induction of twenty ministers, including one woman minister, Gayathri Shanthegowda. The new cabinet composition will see twelve new faces while retaining eight incumbent ministers. This reshuffle is aimed at strengthening the party’s representation within the state government.

According to an official communication, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has given the go-ahead for a diverse list of new and returning ministers. The full roster includes PM Narendraswamy, Shivaraj Tangadagi, Rudrappa Lamani, KS Basavanthappa, B Nagendra, T. Raghumoorthy, BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan, Rizwan Arshad, Santosh Lad, Madhu Bangarappa, Putturangashetty, Mankala Vaidya, Ajay Singh, N. Chaluvaraya Swamy, KM Shivalinge Gowda, HC Balakrishna, Gayathri Shanthegowda, Basavaraj Rayareddi, Vijayanand Kashappanavar, and Laxman Savadi.

The oath-taking ceremony for the newly expanded cabinet is scheduled for 4:05 PM at Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru. This event is a significant step in reconfiguring the cabinet to better represent the state’s diverse political landscape.

Significance of Women Representation

Among the approved names, Gayathri Shanthegowda stands out as the sole woman minister, highlighting the need for enhanced female representation in political roles. Her induction is viewed as a vital step towards inclusivity in governance, reflecting the Congress party’s commitment to empowering women within the political sphere.

Furthermore, the addition of new members to the cabinet comes alongside the return of several former ministers to positions of influence. This blend of new talent and experienced leadership aims to bolster the capabilities of the Karnataka government.

Additionally, the Congress high command has made key appointments to significant legislative roles. G. S. Patil has been designated as the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, while A. S. Ponnanna is set to become the Deputy Speaker. Saleem Ahmed will take up the position of Chairperson of the Legislative Council, and Umashree has been cleared as the Deputy Chairperson.

Implications for the Governance Structure

The cabinet expansion reflects a strategic move by the Congress party to maintain its governance structure amid evolving political dynamics. Earlier on the same day, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge emphasised that the final decisions regarding cabinet appointments were entirely in the hands of the Congress high command. He mentioned that the party has a wealth of capable leaders across various districts and communities.

Kharge noted, “We have more than 140 MLAs, and a multitude of capable leaders. Selecting only thirty from such a diverse group poses a challenge.” This acknowledgment illustrates the party’s depth in leadership while pointing to the complexities involved in cabinet formation.

The D. K. Shivakumar-led ministry is part of the current council of ministers in Karnataka, which has recently undergone a leadership transition. The administration includes prominent cabinet members, such as G. Parameshwara, KH Muniyappa, KJ George, MB Patil, Ramalinga Reddy, Satish Jarkiholi, Krishna Byre Gowda, Priyank Kharge, UT Khader, Eshwara Khandre, Dr. Yathindra Siddaramaiah, Byrathi Suresh, and Sharan Prakash Patil.
