The streets of Patna were filled with jubilant celebrations as Jan Suraaj Party leader Prashant Kishor achieved an impressive lead in the Bankipur Assembly byelection. As counting progressed to Round 22 out of 31, Kishor was well ahead of the BJP candidate, Neeraj Kumar Sinha. News of his strong performance led to hundreds of supporters gathering outside counting centres and party offices, engaged in dancing, applying green gulal, and chanting slogans promoting a new era of alternative politics in Bihar.

Historical Context of the Bankipur Seat

The Bankipur Assembly constituency, previously known as Patna West, has long been a formidable stronghold for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since 1995. For over three decades, it was predominantly held by the Sinha family, initially by BJP leader Navin Kishore Prasad Sinha and later by his son Nitin Nabin, who represented the seat for five consecutive terms. The byelection was necessitated when Nabin vacated his post after being elected to the Rajya Sabha. In the last Bihar Assembly elections in 2025, he had won Bankipur by an overwhelming margin of over 50,000 votes, making Kishor’s current success a notable development for the ruling party’s reputation.

According to the most recent data released by the Election Commission of India, Kishor has secured a total of 50,976 votes. In contrast, Neeraj Kumar Sinha of the BJP trails significantly with 14,953 votes. This shift reflects a critical challenge to the BJP’s dominance in the region and suggests potential changes in voter sentiment.

Kishor’s Political Strategy and Goals

Jahnavi Das, Prashant Kishor’s wife, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the support received from the citizens of Bankipur, stating, “I thank the people of Bankipur from the core of my heart.” Following his illustrious career as a strategic consultant for various political entities, Kishor established the Jan Suraaj Party. His primary aim is to foster an alternative political movement centred on grassroots concerns, particularly education and employment issues.

Achieving a victory in this prominent urban constituency during his inaugural electoral contest reinforces Jan Suraaj’s position as a significant player in the political landscape. Kishor stated that his choice to contest from Bankipur, despite it being a stronghold for the BJP, was intentional to convey a message to the electorate about transcending caste and religious boundaries in their voting decisions.

Kishor has urged voters to overcome their apprehensions associated with both Lalu Prasad Yadav and the BJP, advocating for a more progressive electorate. He explained in an interview that he deliberately avoided choosing a politically safer constituency, emphasising the need for Bihar’s voters to embrace change. “When people start their electoral politics, they look for safe seats for themselves. I am doing the opposite,” he remarked, highlighting his commitment to repositioning political discourse in Bihar.
