Sourav Ganguly Files Police Complaint Over Fake ED Raid Post On Social Media

The CSR Journal Magazine

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has lodged a police complaint over allegedly defamatory content circulating on social media, after a false post claimed that the Enforcement Directorate had conducted a raid at his residence.

The complaint, filed with Thakurpukur Police Station on June 15, names an unofficial Facebook page titled “Sourav Ganguly Fans” and also mentions sports media platform Sportzwiki.

According to reports, the social media post falsely alleged that the Enforcement Directorate had carried out a search operation at Ganguly’s home. The former Indian captain has strongly denied the claim, describing it as completely untrue and misleading.

Ganguly Alleges Attempt To Damage Reputation

In his complaint, Ganguly alleged that fabricated information was being spread deliberately with the intention of tarnishing his image and reputation.

Following the filing of the complaint, police have begun examining the matter and are expected to investigate the source and circulation of the content.

The development highlights the growing challenge posed by misinformation and the misuse of digital platforms, even for prominent public figures.

Ganguly, one of India’s most successful cricket captains, joins a list of former cricketers who have taken legal action against fake or defamatory content shared online.

Tendulkar Took Action Against Identity Misuse

In 2023, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar approached the Mumbai Police Crime Branch after his name, image and voice were allegedly used in fake advertisements and misleading online posts.

Tendulkar’s complaint was filed against unidentified individuals accused of exploiting his identity to deceive users.

The Mumbai Police Cyber Cell subsequently registered a case under Sections 420, 465 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code and launched an investigation into the matter.

The case drew attention to the increasing use of artificial intelligence and digital manipulation to create misleading content involving celebrities.

Gavaskar Secured Court Protection

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has also repeatedly raised concerns over the unauthorised use of his name and likeness on social media.

According to reports relating to proceedings before the Delhi High Court, Gavaskar sought legal protection for his personality rights after discovering that false quotations and manipulated content were being circulated in his name.

The court took note of the issue and directed platforms including Google, Meta and X to remove infringing material and act against fake content within prescribed timelines.

The cases involving Ganguly, Tendulkar and Gavaskar underscore the increasing threat posed by misinformation in the digital era and the growing reliance on legal remedies to safeguard the reputation and identity of public figures.

Police are continuing their examination of Ganguly’s complaint and further action is expected based on the findings of the investigation.
